Conservation Council of WA

Conservation Council of WA The Conservation Council of WA is Western Australia's peak non-profit, non-government environmental organisation.

Together with our members, we're the state's leading voice for nature and climate action. The Conservation Council of WA is the state’s foremost non-profit, non-government conservation organisation. CCWA has been an outspoken advocate for conservation and a sustainable Western Australia for fifty years, working directly with the government, media, industry, community groups, and political parties

to promote a more sustainable WA and to protect our natural environment. Through advocacy, community engagement, policy development, science, and on-the-ground projects, we help create a sustainable future that all Western Australians can look forward to. As WA’s peak environmental group we represent more than one hundred member groups throughout the state, as well as tens of thousands of individuals. We connect with and amplify the voice of this growing network, which covers diverse aims and interests - from promoting renewable energy to the protection of native bushland and wildlife. CCWA works to promote a clean economy that provides opportunities without polluting the ecosystems that support us, or destroying the culture and beauty that inspires us. We work to protect our wild places and ensure that unique wildlife can thrive in their natural habitat. CCWA works with communities and individuals to build skills, empower groups, and strengthen voices at a local level. We also combine the strength of our network to tackle critical environmental challenges at a much larger scale. From the rugged far north of the Kimberley, to the green forested South West, to our amazing coastline and unique marine life, CCWA speaks for the protection and conservation of all nature in WA. Whether protecting icons such as Ningaloo Reef, creating new National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries, or saving old growth forests, our work leaves an enduring legacy for future generations.

Did you see our joint ad in yesterday's West Australian? 👀

While 73% of West Australians support a Renewable Energy Target, the WA Government is yet to set one.

If they do, we'll get cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable power through energy that's made here in WA.

More than 1,200 postcards have been delivered to Premier Roger Cook, calling on him to protect Scott Reef from Woodside’s Browse gas export proposal.

CCWA staff hand-delivered the postcards to Parliament House yesterday, saying the reef "cannot be sacrificed for gas export profits.”

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Member for Bateman Kim Giddens accepted the postcards on behalf of Premier Cook.

CCWA campaigner Victoria Pavy said Western Australians of all ages and backgrounds signed postcards at community events and film screenings across the state, urging the Premier to save Scott Reef from gas exporters.

“Scott Reef is a pristine, 15-million-year-old marine ecosystem off WA’s north-west coast and is habitat for protected species like the pygmy blue whale and green sea turtle,” Ms Pavy said.

“Western Australians treasure our coral reefs, and we won’t stand by and allow Scott Reef to be wrecked in the name of multinational companies making super profits from royalty-free gas exports.

“Woodside and its joint venture partners, including BP, plan to drill up to 57 wells around Scott Reef as part of the Browse gas export project, with the closest gas well less than three kilometres from the edge of the reef.

“The Browse gas export project would put the entire reef system and surrounding ocean at risk of toxic spills and pipeline blowouts, while releasing more than 1.6 billion tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere, fuelling the climate crisis.

“In addition, extracting large amounts of gas from under the seabed could cause the seafloor to sink, destroying turtle nesting habitat on Sandy Islet, at the heart of the reef system.”

Despite fears that a mining company could impact the ecologically significant wetland, WA's Environmental Protection Authority has decided NOT to assess Leichhardt Salt's expansion plans at Lake MacLeod, near Carnarvon.

That decision has come even after the EPA has previously recommended these wetlands be removed from the mining lease and considered for conservation status.

As the State Government has now removed the public right to appeal EPA decisions on whether to assess a project or not, Western Australians are no longer able to hold the government and corporations accountable for these types of unjustifiable calls.

This decision highlights the ongoing need for urgent reform of WA's currently broken environmental laws. Our recently released Back form the Brink report calls for stronger environmental impact assessment processes, including the ability to reject environmentally unacceptable proposals early.

Decisions made on behalf of nature must be transparent, properly scrutinised and backed by science. Without strong safeguards and public oversight, unique ecosystems like the Northern Ponds remain at risk.

🌊 Happy World Ocean Day 🐢

Off the Kimberley coast lies Scott Reef — one of the most pristine, biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet. Right now, it's under threat.

Woodside's Browse gas export project would put endangered species and vast stretches of ocean at risk of toxic oil spills.

This World Ocean Day, the theme is marine protection. So let's protect our precious WA reefs. 🐠

Tell Premier Roger Cook to save Scott Reef. Add your name and send him a message:

Western Australia is one of the world's biggest gas producers. The idea we'd face gas shortages here is ludicrous.

Gas exporters are meant to reserve 15% of production for the domestic market — but a Parliamentary Inquiry found they've only delivered 8%. Woodside's Pluto project? Just 3.4%.

Tell Premier Cook to stop the gas rip-off, protect the Kimberley, and Save Scott Reef.

This World Environment Day, learn how we can bring WA nature back from the brink! 🌳

The theme for World Environment Day 2026 is climate action, with a focus on preserving nature and reducing climate impacts. For Western Australia, that message couldn't be more critical. WA is facing an unprecedented biodiversity crisis. There are currently over 700 species listed as threatened with more being added to that list each year.

The scale of this challenge demands action. ✊🏼

✨WE HAVE JUST LAUNCHED Back from the Brink: A Protection Agenda for Nature ✨— a new report that sets out the opportunities in Western Australia to strengthen biodiversity protection and recovery. To bring nature back from the brink, we need the State Government to respond to the biodiversity crisis and ensure there are no more extinctions.

The report shows real-world examples of how policy is failing the environment and provides 36 recommendations made by experts on what needs to be done to meaningfully protect and restore nature.

Back from the Brink unites community efforts and provides a framework to support the shared voice needed to make these reforms possible. We have plenty of upcoming opportunities for you to get involved and learn more about this groundbreaking report. So stay tuned for more exciting Back from the Brink news and events! 👀

Roger Cook says WA needs more gas — but we're one of the world's biggest gas producers.

90% of what we produce is being exported overseas, mostly royalty-free.

Gas companies like Woodside are taking billions of dollars' worth of gas earmarked for WA and selling it abroad for profit. A Parliamentary Inquiry found they've only delivered 8% to the domestic market — just over half of what they're supposed to.

We don't have a gas supply problem. We have a gas export problem.

Cook doesn't need to wreck Scott Reef or frack the Kimberley. If he's worried about gas shortages, he just needs to enforce his own government's reservation policy.

We’re excited to share the early release of our new report, ‘Back from the Brink’.

To avoid further threatened species extinctions, sweeping changes are urgently needed to WA nature laws.

Back from the Brink includes real-world examples where policy is failing the environment, alongside 36 recommendations asking the state government to commit to protecting WA’s unique biodiversity. This follows the release of new data revealing a shocking surge in the amount of habitat approved for clearing in 2026.

Conservation Council of WA Executive Director Matt Roberts said that in the first five months of 2026, the WA Government has already approved the clearing of 51,000 hectares of native vegetation, with a further 128,000 hectares in new applications for native vegetation clearing.

We cannot continue to clear habitat at this rate and scale if we hope to prevent further extinctions in WA.
