We love seeing photos of old houses in our area and its even better to know that the house is still standing today.

119 Morrison Road in Midland first constructed by George Bond in 1949. Like many homes in that period, it was constructed in two stages.

And it's home to the third generation of Robert Bond's family today.

𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣? – 𝗠𝗜𝗗𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 - 𝗡𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝟮

Our Society is looking for any photos of the Midland Police Station on Spring Park Road that opened in 1966 and closed in 1989.

This was the second police station in Midland’s history and was built to address a serious lack of space and staff amenities at the first Midland Police station on Great Northern Highway.

The site is now the Midland Village Centre carpark facing Spring Park Road. The station was replaced with our existing Police Station further north on Spring Park Road in 1989.

Our Society has tried the WA Police Historical Society and several other sources with no success.

It is the missing piece of our local emergency services history puzzle we would like to solve, if you can assist, please contact us via email: [email protected]

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗟 𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗧𝗢𝗠 (𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗢𝗡) 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗡𝗘𝗧𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗢𝗙 𝗙𝗔𝗠𝗘

Congratulations to Cheryl Sidebottom (Stevenson) who will be inducted in the Australian Netball Hall of Fame in October.

Making her start at Harper Park in West Midland, Sidebottom a tall and agile goal keeper, made her Diamonds debut (Diamond #59) aged just 19 at the 1971 World Tournament in Jamaica, and was a key member of the Australian teams that won world titles in 1971 and 1975.

Her ability to time her jump to deflect and intercept shots became a hallmark of her game, and her presence on court was one opposition shooters learned to fear.

Sidebottom played a major role in Western Australia’s national championship wins in 1969, 1970 and 1971. After a severe ankle injury sidelined her, she fought her way back to the top level and returned to help Australia win gold in Auckland in 1975.

Across her 14 Test caps – all earned at World Tournaments, the only international competition of her era – Sidebottom became one of just two West Australian-developed players to be part of two outright winning Australian world championship teams in the 20th century.

The defender and fierce netball advocate was inducted into the WAIS Hall of Champions in 2018 and the Netball WA Court of Champions in 2022.

Cheryl joins Gaye Teede (nee Switch) inducted in 2009 from our area in the Australian Netball Hall of Fame.

𝗪𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗚𝗜𝗕𝗦𝗢𝗡

Midland and Districts Historical Society is saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Gibson.

On 1 September 1984, Peter, alongside Merv Raison, opened Gibson Raison Settlements in Tuckers Arcade on Great Northern Highway in Midland, specialising in property settlements.

More than 42 years later, Gibson Raison Settlements continues to operate from the same location, making it one of Midland’s longest-running businesses. Peter remained at the helm for much of that time.

Peter was also a long-standing member of the Midland and Districts Chamber of Commerce and the Swan Chamber of Commerce, contributing to the local business community over many years.

In 2023, Peter generously donated to our Society’s collection an award he received at the 1991 Midland Business Awards, presented by the Midland and Districts Chamber of Commerce, for Most Innovative Enterprise.

We thank Peter for his dedication, his generosity and the significant contribution he made to Midland and its business community over more than four decades.

Midland and Districts Historical Society extends its heartfelt condolences to Peter’s family, friends and colleagues during this sad time.

Rest in peace, Peter. You will be remembered.

Funeral Details:
Peter Gibson’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Midland, commencing at 2:30 pm.

Midland and Districts Historical Society is pleased to announce that they now an Associate Member of the Federation of Australian Historical Societies.

The Federation of Australian Historical Societies (FAHS) was established in 1977, has eight constituent members, one in each state and territory, and is the national peak body representing the interests of about 1,200 historical societies and about 100,000 members throughout Australia.

Their members provide hundreds of thousands of hours of work to collect documents and images, research and publish history, present public lectures and exhibitions, protect and preserve built and place heritage, collect material objects and exhibit them in museums, and make an invaluable contribution to heritage tourism.

FAHS communicates with government and public officials to inform them about issues affecting historical societies and museums, and to advocate the interests of historical societies and museums. FAHS also provides access to a variety of guides and training materials to assist historical societies.

Our Society looks forward to working with the FAHS into the future.

Josip and Kristina Pavlinovich on their wedding day in 1931.

Josip born in 1897 and Kristina (nee Lendich) born in 1909 both migrated to Western Australia from the small village of Rašćane in Croatia. They would settle on property in Baskerville.

Josip and Kristina were the first Pavlinovich’s from Rašćane in Croatia to settle in the Swan Valley and Midland.

Josip passed away aged 75 in 1972 and Kristina passed away aged 81 in 1990. The family today are up to the fourth generation with the majority still residing in our local area.
