AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath has called for the major parties to join forces to meet the growing demand in Perth’s northern corridor.

“We know we’re at least one hospital shy of where we need to be, so of course we welcome seeing both sides starting to see why health needs to be prioritised,” says Dr Hoath.

“I don’t want a bidding war, but what I want is a co-ordinated partnership approach towards where our hospitals should be placed.”

Australian Medical Association (WA) members have been recognised in today’s King’s Birthday Honours List.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath was proud of the achievements of WA members.

“Our doctors provide incredible care to the community every day of the week, but it’s a real delight when members who have made particularly significant contributions to medicine are honoured in this way. The AMA (WA) wholeheartedly congratulates these members and hopes they are fully enjoying the satisfaction of this acknowledgement,” he said.

The AMA (WA) also acknowledges the passing of 2024 Australian of the Year Professor Richard Scolyer on 7 June at the age of 59. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a State Funeral would be held in his honour.

Prof Scolyer was diagnosed with Grade 4 glioblastoma in June 2023, and given just 12 months prognosis with the standard surgery-radiotherapy.

His colleague and fellow Australian of the Year, Prof Georgina Long, suggested adapting melanoma immunotherapy to treat his brain cancer – a world first that would require him to forgo chemotherapy treatment.

Despite remaining well for almost two years, his tumour returned in March 2025, and he announced at the time that his prognosis was poor.

St John recorded 5,383 hours of ambulance ramping in May, a new record for the month, up from 4,129 hours in April, and of great concern as we head into the traditionally heavy winter months for ramping.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath said any level of ambulance ramping was a sign of system failure.

“It means patients are being left waiting in ambulances instead of being admitted to hospital for treatment,” he said.

“Record ramping means a health system in crisis — operating beyond capacity and placing relentless pressure on doctors, nurses, paramedics and other frontline staff. We have welcomed measures to ease pressure on the system, but these figures are deeply concerning given winter has not yet fully hit.

In case you missed it, Dr Kyle Hoath discussed Mount Private Hospital in last week's President's blog.

"To have lost a hospital would have been a disaster, especially as we head into another tough winter. While the hospital group may have been struggling, the Mount was doing relatively well and there’s some very experienced doctors and senior leaders who we count on as AMA (WA) members, that have been there for a long time."

As you may be aware, the Telehealth review, agreed as part of our last Agreement negotiations, is underway seeking to modernise the delivery of telehealth and remote care within WA Health including existing industrial Agreement provisions, systems and processes, with a report to be delivered later this year ahead of our next Agreement negotiations kicking off.

The appointed independent reviewers Ms Karen Bradley and Ms Liz Macleod, as well as WA Health System-Wide Industrial Relations (SWIR) Manager Ms Jessie P**n, will be attending our DiT Practice Group Meeting this coming Monday to hear from our DiT Members on this important issue.

We know there are ongoing concerns regarding appropriate fatigue management and remuneration for this work, and this is our opportunity to make those concerns clear directly to the independent reviewers.

We recommend bringing any supporting evidence or examples, such as logs of phone calls per shift, including frequency and duration.

AMA (WA) member Dr Daniel Hunt, a Jaru and Indjibarndi man, has won the Professions category in the 2026 Western Australian of the Year awards.

The award recognises that Dr Hunt is a committed advocate for cultural safety, workforce education and equitable access to care. His work spans clinical leadership, policy reform and frontline service delivery, with a consistent focus on reducing preventable illness and improving outcomes for Aboriginal and vulnerable populations across Australia.

This is his fifth professional award in five years.

Last year Dr Hunt received AMA (WA)’s Advocate of the Year award for his work in improving access to culturally safe healthcare, influencing health policy at state and national levels, and mentoring the next generation of clinicians. He was also NAIDOC Person of the Year in 2025; Australian Indigenous Doctors Association’s Indigenous Doctor of the Year in 2024; and the Royal Australian College of GPs (WA) GP in Training of the Year in 2022.

AMA Council of General Practice Chair Dr Simon Torvaldsen spoke to 6PR about the loss of the only general practice in Kalbarri, and the problems that many GPs face when providing bulk-billing services.

Dr Torvaldsen explains that, since the 1980s, the Medicare rebate has been halved in real terms, which makes it essentially unsustainable for GPs to keep their practice open.

"The rebate has been reduced over time, but also we're needing to spend longer with people to give the care that they require. And it really makes it very difficult - you don't want to disincentivise GPs from spending the amount of time they need with their patients," he says.

"No doctor goes into any field of medicine in order not to be able to give the care that people need. So what we're effectively doing with low rebates is saying either you earn a very low income, or you have to take shortcuts and see more patients per hour and not give the level of care that you know people need."

Adolescents are being shaped by algorithms before they ever walk into your consult room.

Social media feeds, AI companions, and digital environments are actively influencing identity, behaviour, risk-taking, and mental health. Most clinicians haven’t been trained to assess this—yet it’s already impacting care.

Our Youth Friendly Doctor (YFD) workshop: AI, Algorithms & the Adolescent Mind addresses this gap directly.

Delivered by Kaylene Kerr (eSafeKids) and Paul Litherland (former WA Police, Technology Crime Investigation Unit), this session translates complex digital systems into clear, clinically actionable insight.

This was one of our highest-rated workshops last year—and demand is already strong. Attend in person or online (recording included, CPD still awarded). Free for AMA (WA) members.

If you’re seeing young people in practice, this is no longer optional knowledge.

Language shapes who can participate, who feels included and who is able to make informed decisions.

Western Australia’s linguistic landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by skilled migration, international students and family migration.

Understanding what this means, and how to respond, requires more than data. It requires insight into how communities live, communicate and build trust.

This is where working with specialists matters.

Polaron Connect brings together language data, cultural insight and practical experience to help organisations design communication that is not only accessible, but genuinely effective.
