A promising step forward in diabetic foot care

We are delighted to introduce our 2026 Diabetes Research WA Grant recipient, Dr Pamela Chen.

Dr Chen is leading a pilot study exploring how autofluorescence imaging can guide more targeted treatment for diabetes related foot ulcers. This technique uses safe ultraviolet light to help clinicians identify bacterial activity in wounds more clearly and make more informed care decisions.

With thousands of Western Australians affected by diabetes related foot disease every year, this research has the potential to improve healing and reduce the likelihood of avoidable amputations.

“Foot disease in diabetes is often overlooked, yet it affects so many people. If we can find ways to improve healing even slightly, it has the potential to change lives,” Dr Chen shared.

Read more about her important work on our website.

This weekend, Jamie Cripps will play his 250th AFL game for the West Coast Eagles. It’s a major achievement, and we’re proud to celebrate this milestone with someone who has given so much to footy and to the diabetes community.

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 18, Jamie has shown that the condition is no barrier to excellence. As an ambassador for Diabetes Research WA, he shares his story with honesty and humility, helping young people living with diabetes see what’s possible.

From all of us at DRWA:
Congratulations, Jamie. Thank you for your leadership, your generosity, and for continuing to inspire others on and off the field.
