A lot of new faces have found us this month, so let's do proper introductions.

We're Self Made Indigenous Corporation, an Aboriginal-led not-for-profit in WA. We walk alongside young people, and this is what that actually looks like:

Dreamers, our mentoring program. Same mentor, same consistency, one milestone at a time.

Deadly Minds, creative wellbeing. Where a paint pen does the talking until a young person is ready to.

Future Leaders, the bridge into work, training and leadership.

Self Made Future Labs, hands-on STEM for young people who are usually left out of that conversation.

And justice work that doesn't stop at the gate.

We don't fix young people, because young people aren't broken. We build the places where their strengths get seen.

If that's the kind of work you want in your feed, stick around. And if you know one person who'd love it, someone who backs young people, works in a school, or just believes in community, tag them below. That's how a family grows.

Its Djilba in Perth and it is doing its thing, so here's the warmest way to support what we do.

This is the Self Made Oversized Heavyweight Hoodie. Premium 340gsm fleece, oversized fit, built to be lived in.

Here's the part that matters. Every single sale goes back into our programs. The mentoring sessions. The paint pens. The showing up.

We're a not-for-profit. There are no shareholders here. When you buy from Self Made, the money lands where it should: with the kids.

So this isn't merch. It's a young person somewhere getting the support they need, and you get to be warm while it happens.

Grab yours below, and tag us when it arrives. We want to see where these end up.

We've watched this happen more than once, and it never gets less good.

A young person tells us they want a job. What they usually mean is they want proof. Proof that someone would choose them. Proof that they can hold something down. Proof that the future has a spot with their name on it.

So we start small. A resume built together. A mock interview where the nerves are allowed. A lift to the first shift because the bus route is confusing and the stakes feel enormous.

Then payday comes. And it's never really about the money. It's the screenshot of the payslip sent to a mentor at 9pm. It's the shout for family. It's a young person walking into the next week differently because now there's evidence.

Employment isn't the end of our work. It's often the moment a young person starts believing the rest of it.

What was your first job, and what did it actually teach you? Tell us below.

Last night we had the privilege of attending the WA Social Enterprise Awards as finalists in the First Nations Social Enterprise Category.

While we didn’t take home the award, being recognised as a finalist alongside so many incredible social enterprises is such an honour. The evening was much more than awards, it was an opportunity to connect with passionate people who work tirelessly to create positive change across WA.
Congratulations to all the winners and finalists, your commitment to community, innovation and impact is inspiring.
Thank you to WA Social Enterprise Council (WASEC) I M P A C T S E E D Containers for Change WA Lotterywest Westcare Incorporated
for recognising and celebrating the work of social enterprises across WA.
To all the young people we’ve had the privilege of walking alongside, this recognition is for you. Never let anyone tell you your dreams are too big or your past defines you. It doesn’t! Our door is always open for a yarn, we’ll always cheer you on and believe in what you are capable of, even when you might not see it yourself. Keep dreaming, keep challenging yourself to grow, keep believing in yourself, your story is still being written and we can’t wait to see where it takes you.

In a lot of youth programs, culture is a module. A session in week four. A guest speaker once a term.

For us it's the foundation everything else stands on.

When a young person knows who they are and where they come from, everything downstream shifts. Confidence stops being an act. Belonging stops being borrowed. Decisions start coming from somewhere solid.

That's why culture sits inside our work, not beside it. Identity strengthening, cultural learning and connection to community are not extras we add when there's time. They are the reason the rest of it holds.

The research world calls culture a protective factor. We'd put it more simply. Culture is the ground a young person stands on, and our job is to make sure they know it's theirs.

Who was the person who taught you who you are? Give them a mention below.

When a young person leaves the juvenile justice system, the sentence ends. The work doesn't.

Coming home means walking back into the same streets, the same pressures and the same expectations that were there before. What's different, when it goes well, is who is standing alongside.

Our justice engagement work doesn't stop at the gate. We build the relationship inside, and we keep it going outside. The first day back at school. The job interview. The moment an old pattern looks easier than a new one.

Young people coming home from detention are not a risk to be managed. They are young people with a future to build, and every reason to be backed while they build it.

The evidence says trusted relationships are what change the trajectory. Our young people say the same thing in fewer words. Someone showed up.

What do you reckon matters most in a young person's first month home? We'd like to hear it.

When we first met this young person, he preferred to stay in the background. Quiet and reserved, he rarely engaged with staff or support services, and often kept his fringe covering his face, a barrier between himself and the world.

Through Deadly Minds, we met him where he was. No expectations, no pressure. Just an invitation into a creative space where participation didn't require words, only a willingness to pick up a paint pen.

At first, he sat quietly, focused on his artwork. But over time, brief interactions became conversations. Conversations became laughter. Laughter became trust.

The young person who once avoided attention gradually began lifting his head, joining conversations, and letting others see the person behind the silence.

His story is a reminder that transformation doesn't always begin with a big moment. Sometimes it begins with a conversation, a paint pen, a safe space, and someone willing to listen.

Last week, students from Atwell College joined us for a visit to the Telethon KidsInstitute at Perth Children's Hospital.

For a lot of these young people, it was their first real look inside a research environment like this, seeing what a career in health, science or research could actually look like, up close and hands-on.

It's the start of an exciting new partnership, and we're already planning to bring more schools through for the same experience.

This is exactly what we mean when we talk about exposure and opportunity. Sometimes all it takes is one visit to shift what a young person believes is possible for their future.

If you're a school who wants your students engaging with experiences like this, real environments, real professionals, real inspiration, get in touch. We'd love to build something like this with you.

Self Made Future Labs, our STEM Innovation Labs program, built for young people aged 12 to 18.

This isn't a token STEM taster session. It's hands-on, sustained exposure to technology and innovation for cohorts who are too often left out of that conversation altogether.

We know what this program can do. What we need now is the right partners to help us take it further, more equipment, more locations, more young people getting access to skills that open real doors.

If your organisation wants to invest in the next generation of Indigenous innovators, tech leaders and problem solvers, we'd love to talk.

Some of our proudest moments happen after a program ends, not during it.

Young people we've worked with keep in touch long after their formal engagement with us finishes. Sometimes it's good news, a new job, reconnecting with family, staying away from old patterns. Sometimes it's just checking in.

And sometimes, it's the call that matters most.

More than once, a young person has reached out to us believing they'd breached a court order or supervision requirement, about to make a decision that could have sent everything backwards. In those moments, we've helped them pause, get accurate information, and connect with the right support before anything escalated.

That's relational safety. When a young person trusts someone enough to call before making a life-changing decision, that single conversation can change everything.

Success for us was never just about attendance numbers or program completion. It's measured in the moments a young person chooses to reach out because they know someone is still in their corner.

We care and they know we care.
