Recent changes to the Working with Children (Screening) Act 2024 (WA) mean that a person who has been refused a Working with Children Check (WWCC), or whose WWCC has been revoked, in one Australian jurisdiction will no longer be able to obtain or hold a WWCC in another jurisdiction. The changes represent an important step in strengthening WWCC schemes nationally.

All Western Australian WWCC applicants and card holders have been notified that they will be checked against the National Reference System (NRS), the national database that records negative outcomes issued under Working with Children screening schemes across Australia. This check will identify whether an individual is subject to an adverse interstate WWC decision.

When a person is confirmed to be subject of an adverse interstate WWC decision, their WA WWC application will be withdrawn, or their existing WWC Card cancelled. Affected applicants and card holders will be notified that their WWCC application has been withdrawn or their card has been cancelled and their known employers or education providers also notified.

Any person who is the subject of an adverse interstate WWCC decision must immediately cease all child-related work once their WA application has been withdrawn or their WA Card cancelled.

The process to check the NRS has commenced and is expected to take approximately 10 days. Anticipate first decisions will be communicated at the earliest mid next week. Until the NRS check takes place we cannot determine who will be affected by these changes.

This week, we welcomed a fantastic group of delegates to the IEUA WA Office for our Workplace Delegate Development Program.

Over three days, participants developed practical skills, deepened their knowledge, and built the confidence needed to effectively represent members, navigate workplace challenges, and strengthen their collective voice.

A big thank you to ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Š๐’“๐’†ฬ๐’‚๐’… for delivering such an engaging and empowering program, and to all the delegates who contributed to lively discussions and shared learning throughout the training.

We're especially pleased to have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, with delegates highlighting the value of the program, the practical tools provided, and the opportunity to connect with fellow workplace representatives.

Last week we delivered another successful round of our Workplace Delegate Development Program for 2026 at the IEUA WA Office.

On Friday 7th August 2026 we had our first ever paid Delegate Conference and Development Day which brought together union delegates from across Western Australia to strengthen their knowledge, skills and networks in support of members and workplaces.

Delegates had the opportunity to meet the 10th ACTU Secretary and first woman ACTU secretary Sally McManus and also say goodbye to her.

The event emphasised the vital role delegates play as workplace representatives, advocates and leaders within the union movement. Held on 7 August 2026, delegates heard from a range of respected speakers, including keynote speaker and outgoing ACTU Secretary ๐‘บ๐’‚๐’๐’๐’š ๐‘ด๐’„๐‘ด๐’‚๐’๐’–๐’”, IEU Federal Secretary ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’‚๐’… ๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’š๐’†๐’”, and IEU Assistant Federal Secretary ๐‘ฝ๐’†๐’“๐’๐’๐’Š๐’„๐’‚ ๐’€๐’†๐’˜๐’…๐’‚๐’๐’. Presentations covered federal advocacy on professional issues, the WA union movement, psychosocial hazards in the workplace, and employee rights and remedies.

The conference was a successful and informative event, delivering valuable insights into key industrial and professional issues while strengthening delegates' understanding of their role and fostering connections across the union and education community.

We thank all our committed IEU delegates for attending, as well as our guest speakers. We look forward to an even bigger and better Delegates Conference in the future.

Payday Super is here

Thanks to the Australian Union Movement

Your super must now be paid on the same day that you get paid your wages. (Previously, your employer only had to pay your super every three months.)

Pay Day Super kicked in on 1 July 2026. That means, if youโ€™ve been paid recently, nowโ€™s the time to be checking your super account to make sure your employer is following the law.

Depending on your regular pay cycle (for most workers; weekly, fortnightly or monthly) you should have received โ€“ or very soon be receiving โ€“ your super contribution from your employer, in line with your wages or salary.

It must reach your super account within seven business days of your pay day.

The change is a huge win for workers that makes it much easier to detect unpaid super โ€“ plus, it means a bigger balance is compounding sooner; boosting your long-term retirement savings!

Thank You Michele & Sally

The IEUA WA Branch thanks ACTU President Michele Oโ€™Neil and ACTU Secretary Sally McManus as they prepare to step down from their elected positions.

Sally has served as ACTU Secretary since 2017, making history as the first woman to hold the role, while Michele has served as ACTU President since 2018. Together, they have been a formidable team, providing strong and balanced leadership to the Australian union movement, advocating for the rights of all working people and helping to secure some of the most significant industrial and workplace gains in recent years.

Throughout their time in office, they have tirelessly advocated for the rights, conditions and wellbeing of Australian workers. Their commitment, determination and vision have strengthened the union movement and helped deliver meaningful change for countless working people across the country.

Sally will conclude her term at the end of August, with Michele finishing at the end of the year. The Australian union movement is stronger, more united and better equipped for the future because of their leadership.

While we will be sad to see them leave their roles, we thank Michele and Sally for their committed and passionate advocacy on behalf of workers and wish them a happy and relaxing next chapter.
