From 1 July 2026, the NDIS is progressively introducing new sector reforms. These updates are designed to elevate quality standards, enhance provider compliance, and strengthen safeguards across the sector over time.

🧭 What “Choice and Control” Really Means in the NDIS

“Choice and control” is a core idea in the NDIS, but many people think it just means picking which provider to use. In reality, it’s about you leading the decisions in your life, not the system, your planner, or your support worker.

Choice and control means:

You decide who supports you, what kind of support you receive, when and where it happens, and how it fits your goals.

You can say no to supports that don’t match your values, culture, or comfort, as long as your needs are still met.

Your voice stays at the centre of planning meetings, reviews, and daily support decisions, not just the paperwork.

Many participants feel they have little real control, even though the NDIS says choice and control is important. This can happen because:

Information is confusing or overwhelming.

Some workers or planners act like “this is the only way,” instead of explaining options.

There is fear that speaking up might affect funding or support.

Remember: you are the expert on your own life. You can:

Set clear goals (independence, work, study, social life).

Ask questions in planning meetings: “What are my options? Can I try this differently?”

Use a support coordinator or advocate to help you explain your choices, not make them for you.

Choice and control isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being listened to, being offered options, and having the right to change your mind.

Managing your NDIS budget in 2026 has changed. With the 12-month "grace period" officially over, the NDIA is now strictly enforcing the updated Supports vs. Non-Supports lists. The old "safety net" for accidental purchases is gone, making it more important than ever to know where your spending falls.

Not sure if a purchase is allowed? Use our NDIS Fundability Traffic Light guide to keep your plan on track:

🟢 GO! (NDIS Supports)
These are standard disability-related services. If it’s in your plan and directly relates to your impairment, you’re usually clear!

Therapy (OT, Speech, Physio)

Support Worker Hours

Continence Aids & Assistive Technology

🟡 CAUTION! (Replacement Supports)
These items aren't on the standard list but can be approved if they save the scheme money or help you achieve your goals better (like a specific tablet for communication).

CRUCIAL: You must get written NDIA approval BEFORE you buy!

🔴 STOP! (Non-Supports)
These are "everyday living expenses" that the NDIS does not cover. Purchasing these can lead to debt recovery.

Big changes to how NDIS plans are made are coming from mid-2026 under the Australian Government’s New Framework Planning model. Current plans will remain active until you formally transition — no sudden disruptions.

📌 What’s Changing?
✨ Structured Support Needs Assessments — Instead of informal planning conversations, you’ll have a guided meeting with a trained assessor to understand your support needs and goals. These discussions will shape the basis of your funding.

✨ Fairer & More Consistent Plans — The focus is turning toward clearer support needs and flexible budgets that are easier to use and understand.

✨ Phased Rollout — A gradual introduction means many participants won’t notice immediate change, and you’ll be informed before anything changes for you. Children under 18 aren’t included in the initial changes.

📅 Stay Informed & Have Your Say!
Public consultation on the new framework planning rules — which set out how the process will work — is open until 6 March 2026. Make sure your voice is heard.
