Visiting West Coast Maremma Rescue 🐾

On Saturday, Samoyeds of WA Rescue committee members Tracy, Rachel & Craig were lucky enough to visit Coast Maremma Rescue, where we met Carolyn and her beautiful rescue dogs. 🐾

We spent the day helping with some grooming, lending a hand with a few odd jobs and, learning more about these amazing Guardian Dogs.

Maremmas are livestock guardian dogs, bred to protect livestock. The West Coast Maremma Rescue Sanctuary was established to rehabilitate and give these beautiful dogs a second chance at life — many of whom were facing euthanasia.

While Maremmas may look big, white and fluffy like a Samoyed, they are very different breeds with very different needs.

Maremmas are highly intelligent, independent guardian dogs that thrive when they have a job to do. They are not suited to city living and require experienced owners who understand the breed and can provide appropriate leadership, space, training and purpose.

They are definitely not a breed suited to first-time dog owners.

It was wonderful to see the trust Carolyn has built with her rescue dogs and to learn about the incredible rehabilitation work she does for these special dogs. ❤️

Thank you, Carolyn, for welcoming us, allowing us to meet your beautiful rescues and giving us the opportunity to learn more about Maremmas and the important work of West Coast Maremma Rescue.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and came away with an even greater appreciation for these incredible Guardian Dogs. 🐾🤍

We love getting updates on our Samoyed Rescues in their furever homes.

This beautiful boy is Arlo that we rescued from Canberra Pound just before Christmas 2025.

Arlo is now living the best life with his Pawrents. This is an update from his Mum on how Arlo is doing. ❤️🐾

Arlo has settled into our home beautifully

From the moment Arlo arrived, he knew he was home. He’s calmed down so much and is just the best boy.

He eats his food even though he’s not very food motivated 😂 His favorite spot to sleep is right with us, and he’s such a playful, happy boy.

He’s already learning so fast - sit, lay down, hi five, and stay! He absolutely loves his walks. He’s still a little excited on the leash, but we know that’s just because he’s so happy to be out with us.

The biggest win: he doesn’t cry when he’s home alone anymore. And when we come back? Instant hugs, kisses, and the cutest chats.

Arlo has truly found his home with us, and we are all so happy and lucky to have him. 💛
