Cambridge Coastcare

Cambridge Coastcare We care for the fabulous natural coastal dunes within Town of Cambridge. The Group has some 65 members including some 20 family memberships.

All are welcome to join us on our matting, w**ding and planting days scheduled throughout the year on this page. Cambridge Coastcare began in March 1999 with its incorporation and with the formation of a committee of management. The idea came from the Town of Cambridge in 1998 when they expressed an interest in establishing a Coastcare organization to assist with the managing, monitoring and prote

ction of the environment and recreational values of the coastline in the Town. Since we have been incorporated we have managed to acquire around $245,000 in grant monies from various sources.

Today the equipment arrived for our major dune restoration project at Floreat Surf Life Saving Club dunes. Everything is now stored in our Coastcare shed and we can’t wait to get started caring for this special stretch of coastline!
Thank you to Perth NRM and funding from the federal government’s Disaster Ready Fund.

A valiant effort by our volunteer w**ders this glorious morning, manually removing (capturing every leaf!) the aggressive w**d Tetragonia decumbens, commonly called 'sea spinach'. It was threatening to smother our recent plantings at Floreat coastal dunes, so hugely satisfying to completely fill twenty-nine (29!!) tall, green bags (donated by Community Coffee Co) with the dreaded w**d. Thankyou Community Coffee Company and our volunteers!
Lots of interest from the public walking by.

If you look closely you can see Cambridge Coastcare volunteers working to remove plant covers last Sunday, adjacent to the City Beach to Floreat Boardwalk - with the best view of the coast as our 'office'!

Some of our work as volunteers can be almost invisible....as when we remove protective covers from our planted seedlings or when we sort through the cover 'canes' to reuse as many as we can. No less satisfying as we work together !

Our new marketing banner looked fantastic against the Floreat coastline. And managed to catch our President, Ivo Davies, 'pretending' to take a rest after filling 6 bags of protective covers!☺️

A wonderful little booklet, developed by our local western suburbs councils, is freely available to assist our own gardening efforts! It includes plant species, size and colour that thrive in our areas.

Belated Tribute to the late Richard Weller
For one morning in July 2023, we had the immense privelege of having the late Professor Richard Weller planting with us on the Floreat dunes and sharing coffee with us afterwards. Global tributes to Richard include "as a visionary whose influence on landscape architecture in Australia and internationally has been profound and enduring" . How lucky were we to have Richard with us that morning!

Biography Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture Richard Weller passed away on May 15, 2025 in Perth, Australia; he was 61. A vocal critic of what he saw as humanity’s hubris in redesigning Planet Earth, Weller drew on history, philosophy, and the arts to challenge the status quo in the buil...

On his way to Parliament, our local Churchlands member of the Legislative Assembly, Basil Zempilas, stopped by to see the results of our volunteer projects to mitigate erosion and enhance biodiversity along the Floreat coastal dunes.

What a fantastic AGM!
A big thankyou to all who attended.
We were priveleged to hear from from Kingsley Dixon, whose inspiring keynote reminded us just how special Western Australia is and why caring for it matters.
Our President, Ivo Davies, thanked our volunteers, members, supporters and committee for another successful year.
Great people, great conversations and another plan for action ahead. It is wonderful to have such a committed community!
