Floreat beach looked its absolute best yesterday! And our volunteers worked hard to complete this year's planting for our 'mighty' project to protect Floreat SLSC from coastal erosion. The wonderful commitment and generosity of our volunteers deserves celebration!

Rain, wind and steep dunes couldn't stop these Coastcare champions! While many people were seeking shelter from the cold, blustery weather, 17 dedicated Coastcare volunteers pulled on their wet weather gear and headed to the dunes.
Working side by side on steep, rain-soaked slopes, they carefully planted more than 600 native seedlings—each one another step towards strengthening our fragile coastline against erosion and storm damage.
To every volunteer who braved the weather: thank you. Your passion and perseverance are helping to build a stronger, more resilient coastline, and your efforts deserve to be celebrated.

Let it roll!! There is a quick way to cover the dune, once each heavy coir matting roll is anchored securely at the dune top. Gravity helps with a long roll down the slope before we secure the matting (with 600 mm steel pins) to the sand dune.

Moving each roll of matting takes some ingenuity. A full 25mx2m 700 gsm coir matting roll weighs at least 35 kg, and even the roll offcuts are cumbersome. One strong volunteer looked like he was being consumed by sea creatures!

What a difference a couple of days make. Our dedicated Coastcare volunteers joined forces to secure coir matting across 2,500 m2 of newly replenished coastal dunes, tackling the steep slopes with teamwork, skill and determination.
Next week, these dunes will be planted with native coastal species, helping to bind the sand, build a healthier dune system and protect the newly refurbished Floreat Surf Life Saving Club from storm surges and coastal erosion.
Working together we're creating a stronger, more resilient coastline for our community and future generations.

Even before Joe (Tonca Engineering) had completed his dune reshaping work, our volunteers got to work. We are so proud of five of our most experienced members who achieved such a large area of matting on the reshaped Floreat dunes, working from sunrise to sunset yesterday. An awesome achievement, with more planned for Sunday 19/7.

Walking along the coastline at Floreat north on Saturday 11/7, one could see further erosion to the natural dunes. Fortunately no built assets are affected but some planting from previous years has been washed away.

Floreat SLSC dunes are unrecognisable following dune replenishment with an impressive amount of excess sand from City Beach foreshore. Dune reshaping is scheduled to commence from tomorrow, following which we'll matt and plant, but not before we relocate the opportune tent dweller!!
