NAWIC WA Celebrates International Women’s Day with a Fun and Fabulous Trivia Night!

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) WA Chapter hosted its annual International Women’s Day Trivia Night, bringing together industry professionals to celebrate, connect and reflect on the 2026 theme, Balance the Scales.

A highlight of the evening was a panel Q&A featuring two of NAWIC WA’s 2025 Award winners, Renee Nelson and Brianna Fretwell, who shared insights into their careers and reflected on what Balance the Scales means to them.

Renee, recently appointed Head of Pre-Contracts – Energy & Utilities at Downer, spoke about how she fell into her role in mentoring and advocacy. After helping a colleague through some personal challenges, it became the catalyst for the work she now champions today. Drawing on her own experiences, Renee has become a strong advocate for supporting women navigating bullying, domestic violence and other workplace challenges.

Brianna, an HSE Advisor with Laing O’Rourke, reflected on her journey into the industry and how winning her award has strengthened her confidence. She spoke about realising the positive influence she can have through the many people she interacts with in her role, and her passion for helping create safer, more inclusive workplaces.

Both speakers highlighted that their careers didn’t necessarily follow a set plan, instead evolving through opportunities, challenges and a shared desire to be good people and support others.

The night also featured plenty of fun and laughter thanks to our hosts from Connections Nightclub, Barbie Q and Alexas Armstrong. Congratulations to the team from HWL Ebsworth Lawyers, who took out the trivia title for the evening.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the event. The evening was a great reminder of the strength of the NAWIC community and the importance of continuing to champion women across the construction industry.

🚀✨ The NAWIC WA 2026 Mentoring Program Has Officially Launched! ✨🚀

We were thrilled to officially launch the NAWIC WA 2026 Mentoring Program on 10 March, bringing together an incredible community of mentors and mentees ready to embark on nine months of learning, growth, and meaningful connection.

The launch event was proudly hosted at Aurecon’s Perth office, and it was fantastic to see almost 90 participants in the room. With more than 100 people involved in the program this year and 53 mentor–mentee pairs already connected, the energy in the room was vibrant and inspiring.

The evening provided a wonderful opportunity for mentors and mentees to meet each other, start building meaningful relationships, and begin their journey of personal and professional development. A highlight of the event was the engaging Q&A session, where participants shared insights, experiences, and advice that will help shape the months ahead.

A big thank you to our incredible supporters who make this program possible:
💛 Aurecon for hosting us at their office
💛 Mentorloop for supporting the program with their mentoring platform
💛 Eseemey for facilitating the pods and workshops throughout the program

We are excited to see the connections, conversations, and growth that will come from this year’s program.
Here’s to nine months of mentorship, learning, and supporting the future of women in construction. 🌟🏗️

Recently our NAWIC WA members had the incredible opportunity to go behind the scenes at the Swan River Crossings project in the heart of Fremantle. The project involves the construction of the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge, Australia’s first extradosed bridge structure combining elements of cantilever and cable-stayed bridges.

From climbing a 40m high scaffold for the best view in town to stepping inside precast bridge segments, the attendees explored the new bridge structure up close. Back in the office, we also gained insights into the digital engineering and temporary works that make this complex structure possible.

A big thank you to our expert tour guides at the Fremantle Bridges Alliance (FBA) for hosting us!

🌟 A few weeks ago, we gathered for the NAWIC WA 2025 Mentoring Program's Workshop #3 Sustaining Success – Building Resilience, Adaptability & Lifelong Growth, beautifully facilitated by Donna Plunkett.

The session reminded us that sustaining success isn’t about one big achievement, but about the ability to stay resilient in demanding times, adapt to our industry's evolving needs, and continue learning so we can grow. Both mentees and mentors walked away with fresh strategies and inspiration to carry forward—not just for their own journeys, but to support the success of others too.

A heartfelt thank you to Kate Laing, Principal for Integrated Design, for sharing such an inspiring message, and to the incredible Aurecon team for warmly welcoming us into their training space. The right environment made all the difference in creating meaningful conversations and lasting takeaways.

Here’s to sustaining success, together. 🙏✨
