WANADA is proud to welcome Wungening Aboriginal Corporation as the Presenting Partner for the Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drug Workers Forum 2026: Community First, taking place on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October 2026 at the Pan Pacific Perth (Boorloo/Perth).

Guided by the themes Listening, Yarning, and Working our Ways, the Forum has been intentionally designed by the Reference Group to ensure local voices, experiences and ways of working inform presentations and discussions.

Wungening’s support as Presenting Partner reflects a shared commitment to community led practice and to building a strong, skilled Aboriginal workforce across WA.

WANADA is thrilled to have recently welcomed two new staff members to the team - Naomi Carter, Coordinator, Sector Development, and Fleur Ellis, Coordinator, Research and Advocacy.

Naomi joins WANADA with more than 25 years’ experience across government and community services. She brings strong capability in adult and lived experience education, strategic workforce development, and human‑centred, rights‑based approaches. Guided by embodied values, Naomi is focused on approaches that strengthen both personal leadership and collective wellbeing, and is committed to co‑creating practical, real‑world solutions with organisations and communities. She is excited to be working with members to improve capability, support local and systemic change and guide cross-sector collaboration.

Fleur comes to WANADA after a ten-year career in Canberra with the Commonwealth Government, most recently with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet advising on bulk billing and urgent care clinics, health workforce shortages, va**ng and to***co reform, COVID-era social security and supporting Cabinet and National Cabinet decision-making. Fleur is looking forward to helping WANADA work with government, allies in the sector and member organisations to make sure our voice is heard on improving outcomes for the sector and reducing alcohol and drug-based harms.

WANADA is proud to work with Peer Based Harm Reduction WA and alcohol and other drug services to support people to ‘Take the next step’ this World Hepatitis Day.

Wallet cards that encourage people to consider testing and treatment for hepatitis C are on their way to WANADA member services throughout Western Australia. Posters and digital screen slides are also available to display.

These resources complement the Hepatitis C Virus Care Capability in Alcohol and other Drug Treatment Tool (HCVCAT), helping services assess and build their capability for hepatitis C education, testing, treatment and support.

Around 300,000 Australians are living with hepatitis B or hepatitis C, and many remain undiagnosed or not currently engaged in care. Hepatitis C can be cured, hepatitis B can be vaccinated against and managed, and support is available to help people take their next step toward better health.

Testing is simple, and treatment for hepatitis C is easier than ever to start, with a short course of medication that is highly effective.

We welcome enquiries from any service keen to promote Hepatitis C screening, testing and treatment – please reach out.

Register now for the Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drug Workers Forum 2026: Community First, set for Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October 2026 at the Pan Pacific Perth (Boorloo/Perth).

WANADA and the Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drug Workers Forum 2026 Reference Group are excited to invite Aboriginal alcohol and other drug workers to participate.

Guided by the themes Listening, Yarning, and Working our Ways, the Forum will provide a culturally safe space for workers and community members to connect, share knowledge, and strengthen culturally responsive approaches to reducing alcohol and other drug–related harms.

Registration is free for Aboriginal workers and bursaries are available to cover the cost of travel and accommodation for regional workers from not-for-profit organisations. Aboriginal community members from WA's regions who are working to reduce alcohol and other drug related harm may also access bursaries with the support of a local not-for-profit organisation.

The Forum bursaries were proudly supported by Lotterywest.

We encourage people interested in participating to discuss forum attendance with line managers before registration.

Farewell to WANADA CEO Jill Rundle

Friends and colleagues from the alcohol and other drug sector gathered to celebrate and honour Jill Rundle, who has stepped down after more than 26 years of exceptional leadership as WANADA’s CEO, at Next Gen Kings Park last week.

Board member Carol Daws led a panel discussion with Jill alongside long-time colleagues Terry Murphy and Steve Allsop, covering WANADA's advocacy, the quality of the Western Australian alcohol and other drug sector, the value of not-for-profit services, and the cultural security of alcohol and other drug services in Western Australia.

WANADA Chair Sue Budalich also spoke of Jill's courage, humility and determination as a leader, presenting Jill with a memento acknowledging her exceptional contribution to the organisation.

Thanks to everyone who could join us in marking this significant occasion. Jill will be greatly missed, and we hope her legacy will continue to influence the WANADA team and the alcohol and other drug sector for many years to come. We warmly wish her all the best as she sails away for new adventures.

Nominations are open for the Strong Spirit Strong Mind Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drug Awards 2026, presented as part of the Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drug Workers Forum 2026: Community First, held on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October 2026 at the Pan Pacific Perth (Boorloo/Perth).

The Awards honour the outstanding Aboriginal workers, students, programs, organisations and partnerships contributing to stronger, healthier communities across Western Australia.

Each category reflects a different aspect of leadership and culturally responsive practice in the alcohol and other drug sector:

• WA Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drug Worker of the Year – recognising exceptional personal and professional achievement

• Innovative and Culturally Responsive Alcohol and Other Drug Program – celebrating programs developed with and for Aboriginal communities

• Partnership Award – acknowledging collaborative approaches that strengthen outcomes

• Organisation Recognition Award – highlighting organisations that support Aboriginal workers and service delivery

• Outstanding Student Award – recognising emerging leaders studying or completing placements in the sector

WANADA and Peer Based Harm Reduction WA have jointly released two new hepatitis C (HCV) screening resources.

Developed to strengthen routine, stigma‑free screening, the resources aim to make HCV conversations easier for both workers and community members, and to support earlier identification of risk.

The Self‑Screening for HCV Risk tool supports community members to recognise common HCV risk factors, such as tattoos or piercings outside professional studios, injecting drug use, time in prison, or partners who may be at risk.

The Memory Aid for Routine HCV Risk Screening provides workers with practical prompts for raising HCV, key indicators for additional support, and clear explanations of testing and treatment. It highlights that testing is simple, often available as a free finger‑prick, and that HCV is curable with 8–12 weeks of tablets.

The resources were launched at last week’s Regional, Rural and Remote (RRR) AOD Managers Forum in the Pilbara.

Forum participants welcomed the joint resources as helpful tools for normalising HCV conversations and strengthening consistent screening across services.

Day two of the Regional, Rural and Remote Managers’ Forum last week brought regional managers together at Yaandina Community Services’ Turner River Rehabilitation Centre for discussions on workforce needs, priorities across each region, and the development of regional profiles to support future planning. We were also welcomed by Yaandina to visit the Low Medical Detox Service and the Sobering Up Centre in Roebourne.

We are deeply grateful to the Yaandina team for their warm hospitality, generosity of time, and willingness to share insight into their services, as well as for providing transport and ensuring everyone could move safely between sites. We also extend our thanks to all regional managers for their ongoing commitment and contributions throughout the forum.
