Every Thursday, storytelling comes to life in the Bunuru Learning Studio at Gowrie Early Learning Karawara! 📚

Last Thursday, the little learners explored the much-loved story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. After enjoying the story together during mat session, the children extended their learning through a hands-on creative experience.

Using playdough to form the caterpillar’s body and a variety of textured materials to decorate, the children created their very own hungry caterpillars. This engaging experience strengthened fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination, while also encouraging creativity, imagination and self-expression through play.

Well done Bunuru children, what fabulous caterpillars you created! 🐛

Recently, the little learners from the Koorlong learning studio at Gowrie Early Learning Kewdale, participated in a hands on planting experience.

The children carefully took the flowers and small plants from their pots and planted them into the soil, gently handling each plant, digging small holes and watering them once they were safely in their new home. Throughout the experience, the children showed curiosity and care as they explored different flowers, textures and gardening tools.

This meaningful experience supported fine motor development, coordination, teamwork and responsibility, while also encouraging the children to connect with the natural environment and learn about caring for living things.

Well done Koorlong children, we cannot wait to see your flowers bloom! 🌿🌸

Last week, the little learners at Gowrie Early Learning Nedlands explored the importance of road safety as part of National Road Safety Week.

The children began by creating their own traffic lights, exploring road signs and engaging in meaningful conversations about how to stay safe near roads, crossings and vehicles. Through these discussions and hands-on experiences, the children learned about traffic light colours and signals, recognising crossings and signs, and the importance of stopping, waiting and staying aware of their surroundings.

The little learners then transformed their outdoor play space into a busy road safety environment, complete with crosswalks, traffic controllers and bike paths. Through imaginative play, the children practised road safety routines while learning how to help keep themselves and their friends safe.

Wow Nedlands children, what an awesome way to learn about staying safe in our community.🚦

As part of Gowrie’s Minds on the Move – Transition to School Program, the children of the Borang learning studio at Gowrie Early Learning Kewdale continued learning about the Noongar seasons, this month exploring the Djeran season 🍂.

The children discovered that Djeran is characterised by cooler nights and windy conditions and is also a time for gathering food and when red flowering gums bloom. The children also spoke about black cockatoos and explored the colours often seen during this season; red and green.

The children then engaged in an art experience where they used different patterned rollers and small animals to create walking pathways, representing how animals search for food and how the weather changes during Djeran.

Through this creative experience, the children explored different materials and shared their thoughts and ideas about the elements of Djeran, creating stories and meaning through their artwork.

Experiences like this support children’s transition to school by encouraging creativity, communication, cultural awareness, and collaborative learning, while building confidence in expressing their ideas and understanding the world around them.

Well done Borang children!

WOOHOO! It’s Weekend Wonders! 🎉

This weekend’s Weekend Wonder is inspired by the little learners at Gowrie Early Learning Nedlands and is all about turning everyday kitchen items into a fun and engaging sensory play experience!

Do you have any old pots, pans, utensils, or cooking equipment at home that are no longer being used? Or perhaps you could take a quick visit to your local op shop to find a few treasures for play.

By adding recycled cooking equipment to the sandpit, children can explore pouring, stirring, scooping, filling, and emptying as they experiment through play. Adding natural elements such as leaves, flowers, and twigs, along with water and even food colouring, transforms the experience even further; the sand becomes mouldable, while colour mixing introduces another layer of sensory exploration, creativity, and discovery.

This simple activity supports:
🖐️ Fine motor development
🧠 Problem-solving and experimentation
💬 Language and social skills
🎨 Creativity and imaginative play
🌿 Sensory exploration

Let us know in the comments below if you give this Weekend Wonder a go at home!

National Road Safety Week (17–24 May) is a time dedicated to raising awareness about staying safe on and around our roads.

In recognition of National Road Safety Week, the educators of the Koobidja Learning Studio at Gowrie Early Learning Kewdale created a road and cars themed sensory play experience using black beans, Weetbix cubes, and a variety of vehicle and road toys, alongside themed books and puzzles. The Koobidja little learners were then invited to explore the sensory set-up, transferring, scooping and moving materials around the tray while navigating the vehicles through the road system. 🚗

Through this engaging play experience, our littlest learners began recognising different vehicles and road-related objects while strengthening fine motor skills, hand–eye coordination and early language development. The sensory exploration also encouraged curiosity, imaginative play and social interaction as the children explored alongside their peers.

Wow Koobidja children, what a wonderful way to begin learning about road safety. 🚦🚸
