WA blood cancer research making headlines 🩸

The WA-led LEVERAGE clinical trial has been featured in The West Australian, following promising results from the trial in people newly diagnosed with advanced follicular lymphoma.

Led by Professor Chan Cheah and the team at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, LEVERAGE is investigating a chemotherapy-free approach to treatment.

The research has also been highlighted by the WA Government, recognising the important role of WA-led clinical research in advancing new approaches to blood cancer treatment.

A landmark international study, co-led by Blood Cancer Research WA researcher Dr Katharine Lewis, has been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The study—the largest international analysis of its kind—examined data from 1,923 patients with ultra-high-risk large B-cell lymphoma, providing important evidence to help inform future patient care.

Congratulations to Dr Katharine Lewis, Professor Chan Cheah and their international collaborators on this significant achievement.

What inspired Prof Chan Cheah to establish Blood Cancer Research WA?

In a recent interview with ASH Clinical News, Prof Cheah reflects on the experiences that shaped his vision to improve access to blood cancer clinical trials for patients in Western Australia. From his training at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to building a world-class clinical trials program here in WA, the interview explores the journey behind Blood Cancer Research.

Prof Cheah also shares his passion for mentoring the next generation of haematologists, building sustainable clinical trials infrastructure, and ensuring more Western Australians can access innovative treatments closer to home.

Today is World Blood Cancer Day. Blood cancer is a term that refers to cancers affecting the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. , and are all blood cancers.

There is no way to screen or prevent blood cancers. It can affect anyone, at any age.
65 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer each day, that's one every 22 minutes.
