Alcohol and Other Drug Consumer & Community Coalition The AODCCC is the alcohol and other drug peak body for consumer & community informed systemic advocacy in WA.

The Alcohol and Other Drug Consumer & Community Coalition, or 'AOD triple C', was incorporated in 2018 in response to overwhelming support for an alcohol and other drug specific consumer- driven systemic advocacy body. The purpose of our association is to promote the interests, education and welfare of those affected by alcohol and other drug use. We offer membership to people who use or who have used alcohol and other drugs, their families and significant others in recognition that drug related harm does not occur in isolation and that healing involves the whole of our community.

AODCCC Opinion Piece on Rethinking Alcohol’s Place in Sporting Venues

We recognise the pivotal position of sport within Australia, as a cornerstone of identity, community connection, and collective pride. So why does alcohol, one of Australia's most harmful drugs, occupy such a privileged place in Australian sporting culture?

The alcohol industry has embedded itself into the cultural experience of sports by reinforcing the perception that drinking alcohol is safely managed, normalised and an expected part of sporting social life.

Our concern is whether commercial interests are being balanced appropriately against the Liquor Control Act’s commitment to minimise alcohol-related harm and protect the wellbeing of the wider community.

Throughout our systemic advocacy, we are repeatedly:

• Reminding the WA Government of its role to maximise community wellbeing and safety, not maximise alcohol sales.
• Emphasising that when economic interests and alcohol-related harm come into conflict, public policy decision making should put community wellbeing and safety first.
• Warning that making alcohol easier to obtain would likely increase consumption and associated harms, whilst challenging the assumption that more alcohol access at sporting venues is inherently beneficial simply because it creates business opportunities.
• Calling for our government, leadership and regulators to strengthen safeguards, which reduce alcohol-related harm for all community.
• Maintaining that alcohol policy should not be developed solely by industry, regulators and political experts. Instead, alcohol policy decisions must also be informed by consumers, families, carers and communities with direct lived and living experience of alcohol-related harm.

The WA community should not have their safety and enjoyment within sport diminished by increasingly alcohol-focused environments. We want our community to enjoy sport for the passion, connection and unforgettable moments created on the field, court, oval and pitch, rather than for the alcohol-related harms that too often surround it.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Disability have recently released a Report on the Health Impacts of Alcohol and Other Drugs in Australia.

This report comes as part of the Inquiry into the Health Impacts of Alcohol and Other Drugs in Australia, of which AODCCC provided a written submission in 2024, and presented at a Public Hearing earlier this year. You can find direct quotes from our Executive Manager and Lived and Living Experience Representative throughout this report.

Many of the recommendations named in the report align with the perspectives of our membership, as evidenced within our annual membership survey reports and position papers, alongside our inquiry submission and public hearing contributions.

In particular relation to:
- the need for alcohol policy reform,
- the need for stigma reduction efforts,
- our continual support for harm reduction strategies, such as drug checking services,
- the introduction and prioritisation of alcohol and other drugs education within such settings,
- the expansion of the lived and living experience workforce,
- the recognition of co-occurring experiences alongside alcohol and other drug use, and
- a coordinated approach from government to respond with a harm reduction focus that prioritises the health and wellbeing of the community.

We welcome this report and we look forward to seeing how the government can utilise the inquiry recommendations in the development of a new National Drug Strategy, and create safer communities by adopting harm reduction strategies, as part of a harm minimisation focus.

The AODCCC will continue to advocate on behalf of our membership, to ensure the perspectives and experiences of those with lived and living experience of alcohol and other drugs are heard and acknowledged in this space.

It’s Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness month! ❤️ And this Wednesday 9th of September is FASD Awareness Day!

The 9th day of the 9th month is a reminder to recognise the importance of being alcohol-free for the 9 months of a pregnancy.

FASD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy. It affects brain development, learning, behaviour and overall health, and is often labelled the 'invisible disability' because most individuals with FASD have no distinct physical characteristic differences. It often goes undiagnosed or over-looked and can be mistaken for ADHD, autism and behavioural issues.

There is no safe amount, type or timing of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, as exposure at any stage can cause harm.
🤝 It is the responsibility of the whole community to support alcohol free pregnancies!

Ways to get involved this FASD Awareness Month:

🔴 Attend an event in your local area! Find out what’s on here: https://www.nofasd.org.au/about-us/get-involved/international-fasd-awareness-day/september-events-2026/

🔴 Wear red shoes for the Red Shoes Rock campaign! Join the collective and start a conversation about FASD by wearing red shoes or socks on September 9th. Learn more: https://redshoesrock.org.au/individual-participant-kit/

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD)!

2026 marks 25 years of recognising IOAD.
The reality is, we shouldn’t still need this day, but we do.

🎗️ 7 Australians lose their life to overdose each day.

Overdose is preventable and by speaking openly and educating the community on how to reduce alcohol and other drug related harms, we can all play a part in building a world where fewer lives are lost to overdose.

💜 Everyone has a right to respectful and comprehensive care and support.
💜 Policy and legislation must prioritise human rights, protect individuals and communities, and ensure needs are met.
💜 Overdose can and must be prevented. A community-wide effort is needed to achieve this.

What you can do 👉
🗣️ Post about IOAD on social media to bring awareness and start a conversation!
💜 Find an event in your area or visit a building that plans to ‘light up purple’ in honour of IOAD!
🛟Carry Naloxone and encourage others to do the same!

Did you know that alcohol and other drug use can have a significant impact on your teeth?

From tooth decay to dry mouth related problems, to gum troubles and mouth cancer risk, it’s super important to have access to dental services to ensure proper care and management of your teeth!
However, this is not always accessible as dentistry work can be an expensive task with barriers stopping people seeking care.

Palmerston and Uniting Smiles have teamed up to provide free dental treatment to Western Australians impacted by alcohol and other drugs, homelessness, financial hardship, and/or mental health challenges.

The clinic is situated within George Davies House in West Leederville, which is Palmerston’s new community hub for recovery and wellbeing.

The initial focus of the clinic will be on emergency dental treatment, helping people who have been waiting for care for some time and getting people out of pain. Anyone looking to visit will need to be either referred through a case manager or an organisation they are already connected with.

The long-term goal of the clinic is to provide accessible and affordable preventative and ongoing dental treatment for WA’s vulnerable community members.
