Grain Industry Association of WA Inc Formed in 2008 as the not-for-profit industry association representing Western Australia’s grain value chain.

GIWA provides pre-competitive, industry good services (promotion, RD&E capacity building, standards, market access, varietal promotion & rationalisation, project management) to its members and the wider WA grain industry. GIWA has over 150 members from marketers, bulk handlers and accumulators, processors, input supply companies, logistics, financial and agronomic service providers, growers, plant breeders, government and university researchers. Based in Perth, Western Australia, GIWA provides pre-competitive, industry good services (promotion, RD&E capacity building, standards, market access, varietal promotion & rationalisation, project management) to its members and the wider WA grain industry through the work of its Wheat, Barley, Oat, Pulses, Oilseeds and Skills (AGI) Councils. It was a great day to be part of the Buy West Eat Best Meet the Buyer event, which brought 85 WA producers, including GIWA members Alba Edible Oils and My PlantCo, face to face with buyers and industry to discover 600 Western Australian food and beverage products.

It’s always inspiring to see the quality, innovation and passion in our industry. From paddock to plate, WA’s grain growers, processors and food manufacturers are producing food the world wants, and events like this open doors for new partnerships and new markets.

What a night! Thank you to everyone who came along to the 2026 GIWA Forum at Beaumonde on the Point.

We heard from Dennis Voznesenski (Commonwealth Bank), Jessica Lingard (Bureau of Meteorology), Graeme McConnell (Planfarm) and John Woods (Lawsons Grain) on how costs, capital, climate and consolidation are changing grain farming in WA, and the conversation carried on well into the sundowner.

The GIWA Barley Council has released the WA Malt Barley Variety Receival Recommendations for the 2027/28 harvest.

Each year, the Council works with the WA barley value chain to provide guidance to growers and their advisers on which malting varieties are both sought by the market and agronomically suited to WA, and which therefore will likely be segregated by CBH.

It also flags varieties for which opportunities may exist for niche segregations or direct grower-to-buyer contracting. The recommendations can be downloaded below.

Interest in growing oats appears to still be on the rise, with nearly 200 attendees at the 2026 OATSPO Agronomic Showcase last week.

Held on a dedicated trial site in Hillside, just north of Narrogin, OATSPO offered growers, researchers and industry an opportunity to connect, learn and challenge their understanding of the current oat sector, and share insights into the future direction of the oat industry.

The Trial booklet is now available online and the final results booklet will be released late 2026/early 2027.
