Police are urging WA drivers to stay safe, after six deaths on the road this long weekend.

There have been five fatal crashes across the state, and one hit and run in Rockingham.

Superintendent Alyson Brett says anyone travelling today should take care on the road.

"We want everyone to get home safely, we don't want any other families to be grieving and suffer loss like they have already this weekend," she said.

The sixth person to die on WA's roads this long weekend was in the state's South West.

It was just after 1am this morning when a male driver crashed through a bridge and into a drain on Caves Road, near Vasse.

The vehicle was partially submerged in water.

Is there anything we can do to make our roads safer? 🤔👇💬

Western Australia has recorded its highest road toll in five years after 166 people lost their lives on the state's roads in 2021.

STORY: https://ab.co/3HsFCRc.

The number of fatalities rose by 11 compared to 2020, according to Road Safety Commission data.

Road Safety Minister Paul Papalia says the figures are "a terrible tragedy", but that the lower road toll a year earlier was "an outlier" due to a reduction in traffic at the start of the pandemic.

Mr Papalia says a "significant number" of road deaths involved a single vehicle driving off the road, with "inattention or bad behaviour" often playing a role.

"People are driving tired, intoxicated, affected by drugs, or speeding," he said.

Regional areas accounted for 99 deaths in 2021 — six more than the previous year and nearly 60 per cent of the state's overall road toll. Sixty-seven people died on metropolitan roads, an increase of five.
