Lisa Edwards, one of our Co‑Directors, will be giving a guest presentation at Mt Flora Regional Museum on Sunday 26 July for the Friends of Star Swamp Bushland and Friends of Trigg Bushland.

You’re welcome to come along to one or both AGMs, or simply join us at 3pm for Lisa’s talk:
“Butterflies and Bees – Restoring Habitat in Everyday Places.”

We 💚 ground nesting bees 🐝

The majority of Australia’s native bee species nest underground, making bare soil and undisturbed spaces just as important as flowers.

We’ve teamed up with the to install ground nesting bee beds and create habitat for our incredible burrowing bee species in the heart of the city.

Let’s keep making space for native bees across WA suburbs. 💚

Do you have Quenda in your garden or want to attract them? Quenda is the Noongar name for the Western bandicoot, Isoodon fusciventer. They’re a small native marsupial that has adapted well to suburban gardens.

Quenda dig through leaf litter, turn over soil, spread fungi and help reduce fuel load. You can support them in your garden by following these tips.

It’s a great time to start thinking about setting up a frog‑friendly pond in time for spring. These slides walk you through simple, science‑based ways to make your garden a safe place for local frogs -from water access points to shelter, native plants, mosquito control, and even frog hotels.

A quick reminder: it’s illegal to collect frogs or tadpoles from the wild in WA. But you can source tadpoles ethically through community members. If you’re looking for tadpoles, head to this group and read their pinned guidance:

To help prevent the spread of frog diseases, only accept tadpoles from people who live within 5 km of your home. This small step makes a big difference for the health of local frog populations.

If you’d like to add pygmy perch for natural mosquito control, you can buy them from aquarium shops — or ask friends to share if they have a thriving population in their own pond.

And just a note for new pond‑keepers: frogs can’t survive in ponds with goldfish. Goldfish eat tadpoles and eggs, so they must always be kept separate.

Want more butterflies in your garden? Here's the essentials — and the most important one is something many people don’t realise.

While adult butterflies sip nectar from a wide range of flowers, it’s the host plants you choose that truly determine whether butterflies are attracted to and can breed in your garden. Every WA butterfly species has specific endemic plants their caterpillars rely on for food. No host plants means no caterpillars… and no butterflies.
