Mettamorphosis' key mission and vision is working towards ensuring children and young people's safety and wellbeing. Our work is focused on educational, advocacy and research that promote human rights and social justice for children and young people, including raising awareness and funds to support the educational needs of displaced children. We have been awarded a 2021 Safer Children, Sa
fer Communities Impact Grant to help children, young people and their families stay safe and protected in Australia. The grant will help us to deliver a pilot tour of the Feeling Safe and Free project led by our Founder, Dr Marilyn Metta to build children and young people's capacity to navigate the world safely and freely. One of our biggest social impacts is the production of the award-winning documentary film, "How I Became a Refugee" in 2014. The film follows the journey of a Burmese Chin family from their homeland as refugees of religious persecution from a military government as they travel through Malaysia before resettlement in Australia. The film was a finalist for the IAFOR Documentary Film Award (2015), and won the Awards of Recognition at three prestigious international film competitions in 2015. It was produced as part of a project to raise awareness and foster better understandings of the experiences and challenges faced by displaced people. A study guide aimed at primary and secondary students has been recently released to accompany the documentary. Along with the documentary film, this forms a national educational project undertaken in collaboration with the teachers and educators in high schools across Australia. This educational project aims to explore attitudes towards refugees and asylum seekers amongst high school students, and how participating in the "How I Became A Refugeeā educational project might shift attitudes and promote better cross-cultural understandings amongst young people. This project will be undertaken with participating Australian high schools since 2016. The organisation currently maintains funding and support for three schools for Burmese Chin refugee children in Kuala Lumpur.
