Last Saturday, we attended an interesting free Permaculture Design 101 workshop run by the City of Stirling, which included an element analysis activity at the Mount Lawley Inglewood Community Garden.

It was well-attended by very engaged participants, despite the chilly Djilba morning. Facilitator Fiona is the City's Urban Greening Officer, very passionate and generous with her knowledge, drawing on her previous experience as a permaculture educator.

Books authored by well-loved Perth permaculture guru Ross Mars were made available to everyone to take home.

(Note: Our community garden in Read Park is not an official permaculture garden but we promote chemical-free, sustainable natural gardening practices. Our motto, "Come Grow With Us", values and code of conduct are aligned with permaculture ethics, growing food and community, taking care of people and the planet and being kind.)

Just having systems thinking, reducing waste, being sustainable and making small adaptations working with what we have, is traditional gardening and lifestyle wisdom.

One of the conversations we had was about being selective with permaculture teachings to suit where you are and your own joys. So while some hard-core permies will insist on only growing plants you can eat, rather than inedible flowering plants, it's OK, if it brings you pleasure and joy, to grow flowering plants for their beauty and to attract friendly pollinators.🐝

Overall, a great experience.

Mount Lawley Inglewood Community Garden is a beautiful, thoughtfully designed permaculture-based community garden with both private plots and communal gardens, with a diversity of plantings, composting facilities and urban wildlife. It was lovely to meet their members, Chair Curt and Shelly, who made us very welcome too.

Enjoy the photos. Well worth a visit! 🌼

CODA FOR REFLECTION
It also helps to think about permaculture as part of a "broad church" of natural and traditional gardening wisdoms from all over the world that are, at their core, about respecting nature, loving the planet and taking care of all living things, giving more than you take, and just being gentle on this earth. πŸŒπŸ’š

Story Time is a great way to end every play session at Grubs'n'Bugs!

Our playgroup is sponsored by Connect Victoria Park Inc meets Friday mornings 9.30-11am during school term for intergenerational nature play and to learn to grow things 🌱 and make new friends.
Our playgroup motto is "Bee 🐝 Kind, Bee Curious", a perfect match for our garden motto, "Come Grow With Us". πŸ›πŸž

Grubs'n'Bugs started in 2022 because Luke and Vicki at Connect Victoria Park were inspired by the TV series "Old People's Home for 4 year olds" and wanted to bring the joy of intergenerational connections to a garden setting.

If children learn to love πŸ’š nature, they may do a better job of taking care of our planet 🌏 than previous generations have.

Thanks so much to fun guy Iain and Ishani The Cultivating Curmudgeon. It was such an interesting hands-on workshop. So good, there wasn't mushroom for improvement πŸ˜„. Iain is a kind, generous member and great supporter of our garden.

Thanks so much to Iain and Ishani from The Cultivating Curmudgeon for running a wonderful DIY oyster mushroom lab session this glorious Djilba morning for fellow members.

Iain was very generous with his knowledge and experience with DIY mushroom growing, and also offered zero-waste sustainable options. Members made their own oyster mushroom kits to take home.

The workshop spawned a whole bunch of ideas, and has inspired our members to start a mushroom club.

As a little gesture of thanks, we presented a garden-grown pumpkin πŸŽƒ for the Curmudgeonly kitchen!

Lots of photos from a visit to Gnarojin Community Garden in Narrogin, by some of our members.
It's delightfully charming and quirky, a proper working garden with a recycling hub.
GCG also host the local farmer's markets where they have their own stall selling freshly grown produce.
Their slogan "Growing food, friendship and community" aligns with our motto, "Come Grow With Us".
It's always interesting and inspiring to visit other community gardens to see how they do things!
