This week Kaarakin (which includes Wildlife Australia Inc), said goodbye to our beloved Mia and Woosha. Two of our three remaining desert dingoes. Mia was the matriarch of the pack that lives at our center and Woosh, her son, was always there to back her up. They spent everyday side by side until the very end.

These ambassadors of their species have touched so many lives. Their spirit (captured so well in the video here), their determination and affection will live long in our memories. Mia and Woosha, we promise never to stop fighting for your species.

Amy says welcome to Makuru! This is the coldest and wettest time of the year here in Perth.

Makuru is also the season where you’ll see animals start pairing up. Look up in the sky and you might catch a pair of ‘wardongs’ (ravens) flying—note how suspiciously quiet they become as they cease their cawing for a mate.

Flowers of blue and purple hues such as the Blueberry Lily and Purple Flags will start to emerge and blossom.

And don’t forget to keep an eye out for ‘mali’ (black swans) on our lakes and rivers as they prepare to nest and breed.

Meet our dingoes

••JUNDA••

Junda was born at Kaarakin and is our youngest dingo. He’s also an alpine, meaning he’s found in the high country of Victoria and New South Wales. He spends his days trying his hardest to annoy his auntie, Nala. Junda’s a mischievous boy, who thinks he is big and tough, but deep down he’s one big teddy bear who’s quick to roll over for a belly rub.

Dingo, not dog...
Hey I’m Alex, as you can see my eyes are a little different to a domestic dog. Let me tell you why.
Domestic dogs have been bred for hundred of years to maintain eye contact with humans meaning their eyes are forward facing.
Us dingoes have almond shaped eyes that sit on an angle to give us wider peripheral vision. We rely on our sight to hunt and we love to be as high as possible to survey our territory and spot prey.
Those domestic dogs love to stare at humans but I will only give you about 5 seconds of eye contact when you first meet me.

World Happiness Day 2024 is a reminder to keep moving towards a happier and more inclusive world. We only hope this includes the addition of our Dingo to the native species list and protection for them in each state and territory of Australia 💛🧡
