Miners' Promise

Miners' Promise Miners’ Promise is not an Insurer or an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Miners' Promise is a registered charity who provides compassionate care, guidance, trauma-informed grief counselling, practical assistance and financial support for bereaved mining and resources families. Miners’ Promise is an independent not-for-profit member-based organisation, which provides urgent support to employees and their immediate families across the Australian Resource Sector, when imp

acted by a significant crisis event. Its distinctive point of difference being; that whilst it does provide financial support, it also provides tailored practical and emotional support on the ground.

💫 We were incredibly honoured to be the charity partner in this year’s Surface Mine Emergency Response Competition hosted by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA at Hannans North Tourist Mine. A big congratulations to the 2026 winners, Northern Star KCGM Operations!

Established in 1903, it’s one of the oldest safety competitions in the industry, playing an important role in strengthening emergency preparedness across our surface mining operations.

This year saw 14 highly-skilled teams test their teamwork and resilience in scenarios spanning firefighting, vehicle extraction, rope rescue, confined space rescue, first aid, team skills, theory and hazardous materials response.

Thank you to all the companies and individuals who donated items for our silent auction, including a beautiful ‘Normandy Golden Grove – MRT’ belt buckle, donated by long time mines rescue committee member Peter O’Loughlin from his private collection which sold for a massive $2000! The final tally for the day was a whopping $9833 which also included a generous donation of $5000 from Marcus Day at ARCHER Access.

These donations will go directly to supporting mining, energy and resources families across Australia through crisis, trauma and loss 💛

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA for your continued support of our charity. We are incredibly appreciative of your ongoing commitment to the work we do.

Miners' Promise warmly invites you to our special movie fundraiser where we will screen the powerful film 'Pike River' which tells the incredible true story of two women whose friendship gave them the strength to fight for justice following the 2010 Pike River Mine tragedy, which claimed the lives of 29 men underground.

We are especially privileged to have Joanne Ufer, who lost her son Joshua in the Pike River disaster to be speaking at this fund raiser. After losing her son Josh, Jo became a passionate advocate for workplace safety as well supporting families navigating the aftermath of work-related fatalities and life-changing injuries.

Professionally, Jo has over 15 years’ experience working within the mining industry in Queensland and New South Wales as dedicated Human Resources professional, a career that combines her passion for working with, caring for and bringing out the very best in people.

In April 2026 Jo joined Miners’ Promise as an Ambassador 🩵

Thank you to everyone who went above and beyond to travel from across Queensland and New South Wales to be with us in Brisbane last week for our first ever Miners' Promise East Coast Standing Together.

We had more than 20 people in the room with some travelling over 1,000km each way to be there.

It was truly powerful to witness the courage, compassion, and support in the room, along with the openness and generosity shown by everyone in sharing their stories of loss, love and hope.

Bringing our Queensland and New South Wales families together for the time was a genuine honour and privilege, with tears and laughter we remembered those tagged off too soon and celebrated the legacy they leave behind.

Following workplace tragedy, Miners’ Promise ensures that no one faces the journey of loss, grief and recovery alone. We stand together, one step at a time, for as long as families need us.

Our deepest appreciation to our Principal Partner Argonaut who funded this Standing Together, impactful in the moment, and impactful for our families in the months and years ahead as they walk with us, and now together.

We are honoured, in the memory of Nigel Haines, to launch our second Miners' Promise Podcast with the extraordinarily special Robina Haines: https://youtu.be/m1xktRBwr_4

Robina and her three young children, Jaxon, Savannah and Orlando experienced the worst you can; the Police at your front door telling you that your beloved Husband and Dad was not coming home from work.

The story that Robina shares with Debbie Morrow, our Executive Director, is one of deep love and profound loss; it is also a story of humility, gratitude and the unwavering strength, determination and hope of a Mum, who, within a year of losing Nigel confronted her own mortality with a cancer diagnosis.

Of connecting with Miners’ Promise, Robina says “Helen [Helen Fitzroy, co-founder of Miners’ Promise] rang me – best thing that ever happened to me”. “It’s like a big weight was lifted off my shoulders, I still cry about it now”.

Of recording this Podcast Deb says “I am often asked about the professional and personal difficulty of being involved with Miners’ Promise; Is it sad? Is it depressing? Is it confronting? It may be all those things, but it is so much more than that, and this Podcast captures the very essence of Miners’ Promise and the families we serve. Grief is love and all our families inspire me everyday as they journey forward honouring the legacy of their loved ones with heartfelt gratitude for the life they shared and using that strength as hope for the future. Thank you Robina, having you in my life is a gift.”

Robina has channelled her grief and fight for life into support for others, more about her books can be found here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-29/robina-haines-survived-grief-and-cancer-by-writing/9597466

This new method of engagement for our Charity is possible through the generosity of Josh Collins and our Promise Partner The Gold Room Podcast and the kind support of Problematic Media. Our deepest thanks.

We especially thank Aaron Morey for opening the event and Aaron Lawn for sharing his personal reflections on the care and enduring relationship the Lawn Family has with Miners' Promise.

With six fatalities across Australia to date in 2026, the need for Miners’ Promise has never been greater, and as we move forward our vision is bold; to be integrated into the response plans on every Mining, Energy and Resource site in Australia.

Because when accidents happen, which they do, having trauma-informed response readiness, and the team at Miners’ Promise by your side ensures the best possible care in the toughest of times.

To those we serve, it is an honour and privilege.

To those who support us, we express our heartfelt appreciation.

On Saturday 14th March 2026 the mining industry experienced another tragic loss with the passing of Simon Mukwarami.

Simon was 47 years old, loving husband to Patience and father to Natasha. They had been building a life in Australia, full of hope and opportunity, shaping the future they had dreamed of together.

We are reaching out with love in our hearts to ask for your support.

Details of the Memorial Fund for Simon is below, nothing can compensate for the loss of life, particularly in a tragic workplace accident, but every dollar raised will help the Mukwarami family as they navigate life without Simon by their side.
