At 90, Barry is still showing up.

CPA Toastmasters recently celebrated a very special milestone, the 90th birthday of their much-loved member, Barry Tregenza.

Fittingly, the meeting theme was “The Power of Habit.”

Barry continues to show up, participate, share a lifetime of experience and remain open to learning alongside his fellow members. At 90, his enthusiasm for Toastmasters is a beautiful reminder that growth has no age limit, and neither do connection, contribution and belonging.

Habits aren’t built in a day. They are built each time we make the decision to show up.

Barry has certainly made showing up count, inspiring those around him through his consistency, curiosity and passion. What a wonderful example for every one of us, wherever we may be in our own Toastmasters journey.

From all of us across District 17, happy 90th birthday, Barry! 🥳🎂 We hope there was plenty of cake, and that you saved us a slice!

Thank you for reminding us that we are never too old to keep learning, sharing and becoming.

🌟 Congratulations to Henry Yau, DTM twice over!

Exactly ten years after achieving his first Distinguished Toastmaster award, Henry has reached Toastmasters International’s highest educational achievement for a second time.

Making this milestone even more meaningful, Henry’s first DTM was presented by his close friend and mentor, Past District Governor Ian Pickens. His second will be presented by Ian’s wife, our current District Director, Maree Pickens, a special moment Henry had hoped and planned for.

Across 17 years in Toastmasters, Henry has served, led, mentored and inspired members throughout District 17 and beyond, including serving as our District Director in 2020–2021.

Congratulations, Henry, on this magnificent achievement and the extraordinary contribution behind it. Seventeen years, and still going strong! 👏

🎉 Happy Birthday, Tom!

What a way to celebrate a birthday week, representing District 17 on the international stage in Vancouver! 🇨🇦

While attending the 2026 Toastmasters International Convention, Tom had another reason to stride onto that stage when District 17 was recognised for achieving 100% membership retention.

We hear the D17 contingent went just a little wild when our District was announced!

Tom, thank you for the leadership, energy and commitment you bring to District 17.

🏆 DISTRICT 17 — SMEDLEY DISTINGUISHED!

What a proud moment for Western Australia.

At the 2026 Toastmasters International Convention in Vancouver, Canada, members and friends of District 17 took to the international stage as our District was recognised as Smedley Distinguished for 2025–2026.

And look at that banner! 💙

Smedley Distinguished is the highest level of District recognition, reflecting achievement across club growth, membership and Distinguished clubs.

Behind this moment are thousands of individual moments, members renewing, guests becoming members, clubs growing, leaders stepping forward, teams supporting one another and volunteers giving their time.

This belongs to District 17.

To our 2025–2026 District leadership team, our club leaders and every member who contributed to this achievement, thank you.

Have you visited another Toastmasters club lately?

District 17 Public Relations Manager Mairia recently had the pleasure of visiting Touch of Gold Toastmasters in Kalgoorlie, pictured here with Club President Rose and Vice President of Public Relations Jill.

What a warm and welcoming club, with some wonderfully experienced speakers, plenty of laughs and lots of opportunity to get involved.

Mairia jumped in too, evaluating a speech and tackling a Table Topic: Is reading books a dying art?
