Baigup Wetlands Interest Group Baigup Wetlands Interest Group is a community group dedicated to the care and restoration of Baigup; part of Bush Forever Site No. 313.

Baigup Wetland Interest Group began as a virtual community network of people who care about our remnant environment. Since 2012, our aim is to see Baigup Wetland protected and preserved into the future as a valuable natural resource for wildlife, for the health of the Swan River, and for human recreation, wellbeing and education. Our major objective is to encourage community interest in Baigup by building awareness of its history, natural assets, and challenges through a program of community activities and education. An electronic newsletter is issued four times a year. Weeding days are held several times a year to support the work of City of Bayswater’s Department of Sustainable Environment and members work closely with the City on matters such as habitat preservation for birds, damage to infrastructure, changes in water regimes, algal blooms, new w**d infestations, etc. We also liaise with other government and non government agencies responsible for protecting, restoring and preserving Baigup Wetland.

Bird count. The Aussie Bird Count is a fun, easy way for all of us to take a national snapshot of the birds around us as we connect with nature. With just 20 minutes, you can help build a picture of how our feathered friends are faring and contribute to something that really counts.

Celebrate National Bird Week by taking part in the biggest citizen science project to hit Aussie shores. Join thousands of people from across the country, heading out into their backyards, local parks or favourite open spaces to take part in the Aussie Bird Count.

This morning some of our group met with DBCA and City of Bayswater staff to learn more about the impact of polyphagous shot-hole borer in wetland environments and how we can support efforts to monitor and collect data on this invasive beetle. We’ll keep you posted as to how you can help.

What a great w**ding day yesterday at the Kelvin Street entrance with 16 helpers turning up on a lovely morning. Lots of w**ding was done around the new plants installed in winter. And morning tea provided time for a very pleasant catchup. Many thanks to Judy and Mike plus helpers for making it all happen.

Our little Monday group (8.30-9.30am) also had a really productive session this morning in the area opposite the Water Corporation block where Swan Lake Main Drain is deflected through an 'S' bend into the Primary Lake. Again there were pepper trees to be tackled, along with the usual annual w**ds. The skill our pepper puller has in manoeuvring the biggest ones out of the ground is so impressive. The photo shows not our hero, only one of his astonished admirers 😄 Check out the root system of this plant!
