Have you ever wondered what an anaesthetist really does… outside of Grey’s Anatomy? So did we. So, we asked!

Dr Warren Pavey, much-loved anaesthetist at the Fiona Stanley Hospital Heart and Lung Transplant Service, said anaesthesia comes down to a little science, a touch of patient rapport, and a whole lot of teamwork.

The moment one of our transplant patients is matched to a donor there’s a small window to act – Warren and the rest of the theatre team need to move like clockwork. Warren depends on the surgeon and the nursing and perfusion staff, who all depend on him back. It’s this harmony he finds most rewarding 💜

Chair of the Heart and Lung Research Institute, Warren sees his team’s real-life impact at the Breaths & Beats Ride, where our former transplant patients ride alongside the clinicians who gave them a second chance at life – together raising money to give that chance to others.

🌧️ Rain Couldn’t Dampen the Spirit — HLRI WA at the DonateLife Walk 🚶‍♂️💜

HLRI WA was honoured to attend the DonateLife Week 2025 Launch Event and join the DonateLife Gift of Life Walk on Saturday, July 27, celebrating the power of organ donation.

Despite the weather, it was inspiring to walk alongside Transplant Recipients and their families, Donor Families, Nurses, Doctors and leaders like Meredith Hammat; WA Minister for Health. Their dedication to the transplant community is truly commendable.

We were also proud to stand with those who ride in the Capital Limited Breaths and Beats Ride, many of whom are transplant patients and passionate advocates for life-saving research.

Together, we walked with purpose — rain jackets, umbrellas, and all — to honour donors and support those still waiting for their second chance at life.

💜 Thank you to everyone who showed up and stood strong for this vital cause.
