On National Sorry Day, we at Centrecare remember and acknowledge the profound pain and ongoing impact of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, communities and cultures.
We honour the strength, resilience and dignity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including Stolen Generations survivors, their families and communities, and recognise that this history continues to shape lived experiences across Australia today.
This year’s theme, 'From Sorry to Action,' calls on all of us to move beyond acknowledgement, to ensure that our commitment to reconciliation is translated into meaningful, sustained action.
Guided by our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), Centrecare will listen and amplify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, with a special regard for Elders, community leaders and those with lived experience. We are committed to strengthening our workforce’s capability to ensure culturally safe and responsive services.
Centrecare will support truth telling and a genuine recognition of the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma.
We will continue to build respectful and genuine relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations led by the recognition of the importance of culture, connection to Country, family and community in healing and wellbeing.
On this “Sorry Day” Centrecare acknowledges reconciliation as an ongoing journey needing courage, accountability and partnership. It requires us to look beyond our preconceptions and be guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices as we take practical steps towards healing and justice.
As we look ahead to May 2027, marking 30 years since the Bringing Them Home Report was tabled, we are reminded that this work remains unfinished. As individuals, organisations and communities we must remain focused on moving from acknowledgement to action, ensuring our efforts contribute to real and lasting change. It is our hope that this happens within the lifetime of Stolen Generations survivors and that it can be the basis for the wellbeing of future generations.
Centrecare reaffirms its commitment, to move from sorry to action, and to work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to support healing, strengthen communities, and contribute to a more just and inclusive future.
