📣 WA Poets Inc. Annual General Meeting 2026
Calling all WA Poets members! Join us as we reflect on the year gone by, elect our new committee and discuss what's ahead for WA Poets.

📍 The Wetlands Centre Cockburn, 184 Hope Road, Bibra Lake
💻 Attend in person or online via Microsoft Teams

The AGM will be followed by the first meeting of the newly elected committee from 7.00–8.00 pm.
🗳️ Committee nominations close Friday 23 October at 6.00 pm.
Members are warmly encouraged to attend and have their say. Non-members are welcome as observers.

Saturday Night Poets brought together an incredible mix of established and emerging voices at the City of Perth Library, with performances from Reneé Pettitt-Schipp, Giles Watson, Coral Carter, Leonard James, Emilie Collyer and Ender Başkan, alongside our Young Poets Showcase.

The evening culminated in Grey Maali's Listen!, an immersive collaboration blending poetry, cello, didgeridoo, electric guitar, digital audio and visual projection.

Thank you to all our poets, performers, young writers, host Samantha Melia, and everyone who joined us for a special night of poetry in the heart of Perth.

As part of Perth Poetry Festival 2026, Portal to the Regions brought together poets, spoken-word artists and musicians from the South West alongside special guests from Perth; with new work, poem-songs, Poetry Slam winners, local voices and an open mic.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Marritree Fine Art & Books, and to everyone who tuned in online from Perth and beyond.

After a beautiful first run in July, CYANO & SIP returns by popular demand, this time as part of Perth Poetry Festival 2026.

A day of blue sunlight and wetland alchemy at Bibra Lake.
Begin with a guided wetland walk and meditation. Gather leaves, shapes and textures from the landscape. Learn the slow magic of cyanotype and make your own sun-printed works. Sip, relax, have a bite. Then turn what you have noticed, touched and made into poetry.

THE TOM COLLINS POETRY PRIZE 2026 — ENTRIES CLOSE 30 SEPTEMBER
Just a few days left for WA writers to enter one of Western Australia’s longest-running poetry prizes.

Established by the Fellowship of Australian Writers WA in 1975, the Tom Collins Poetry Prize commemorates the literary contribution of Joseph Furphy, who wrote Such is Life under the pen name Tom Collins. More than fifty years later, the prize continues to recognise strong contemporary Western Australian poetry in all its forms.

The theme is open, so there is no prescribed subject or style. Send the poem you most believe in. And there's a really attractive prize pool:
First Prize — $1,000 | Second Prize — $300 | Third Prize — $100

Poems may be up to 60 lines, with a maximum of three entries per poet. Entries must be previously unpublished and are judged anonymously.

And here's to the winners of the 2026 Haiku on Hay Competition presented by City of Perth Library ( ) in collaboration with WA Poets.

🌸✒Thank you to everyone who entered our the contest. With more than 200 entries received, our judges certainly had a challenging task selecting the winners. The winning haiku and finalists will be on display in the Library and on our website throughout September.🌸

First Prize goes to Damen O’Brien for Sleeping In, with Dean Gessie taking Second Prize for i loved you in all those wilding places.

Congratulations also to our Highly Commended poets Peter Mitchell, Henry Hayden, Kabal Briar and Jaya Penelope, and our Commended poets Fiona Burrows, B. R. Dionysius and Robert E. Shapiro.

A heartfelt thank you to our 2026 judge, Deanne Leber, who read and considered more than 500 poems before arriving at this remarkable final selection. We are enormously grateful for the care, attention and thought she brought to the judging.

What makes something a poem, and can a machine create it?

On Sunday, Natalie Damjanovich-Napoleon, Dennis Haskell AM and Roe Kanchi came together at Mattie Furphy House for a thought-provoking conversation about AI, creativity, authorship and the future of poetry.

With plenty of questions and perspectives from the audience, it was a fascinating discussion that didn't necessarily seek to find one answer, but gave us plenty to think about.

What a terrific night, Once Uopn a Time in Fremantle🎙️
This bunch was so brilliant. And such a warm crowd. This superb little open mic full of range, variety and different voices. A generous, lively and uplifting evening indeed.
Plus Fremantle, just before the Grand Final, had a little extra festivity in the air too. ✨

Paddy McCarthy is a wonderful host and does a beautiful job of holding a safe, welcoming space in which poetry can take risks, find its feet and thrive.

We’re really glad to bring another open mic into the Perth Poetry Festival fold. One of the joys of the festival is finding and sharing the little enclaves where poetry is thriving across Perth and beyond, held together by passionate people and engaged communities. And Perth Poetry Festival will be there: helping more people find their way into these rooms.

Thank you to everyone who read, listened and helped make the night what it was. 💛
