In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore cyanotype, a camera-free photographic process that uses UV light to produce deep blue-and-white images. Working with plants, found objects and transparent materials, participants will compose directly on light-sensitive paper, expose their arrangements to UV light, then wash the paper and watch each image emerge. Along the way, we will experiment with light, shadow, exposure time, transparency and contact.

Everyone will leave with their own original cyanotype prints. No previous art, photography or science experience is needed.

Led by Associate Professor, Kirsten Hudson, artist, researcher, educator and co-lead of Curtin University's Sciene Meets Art initiative.

Presented by Regional Arts WA as part of Social Fabric, the workshop extends the public program of Light as Voice, a Science Meets Art residency hosted by Palya Walkaly-Walkalypa Gallery at Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison, with support from Curtin Kalgoorlie and funding from the WA Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport.

📷 Artist of the Month: Halim Mellick

Photographer Halim Mellick, from Rubibi/Broome, has shot major AFL moments, been published on national mastheads, won recognition at the World Sports Photography Awards, and even had one of his shots licensed by Nike.

Halim's own story spans Japanese pearling divers, the Stolen Generations, Lebanese migration and Broome's extraordinary multicultural history, a lineage that includes Bran Nue Dae writer Jimmy Chi Jr and actor Ningali Lawford.

From BMX culture and Perth's live music scene to sports photography and now freelance life (plus an unexpected new obsession with birdlife), Halim's instinct stays the same: look past the main event, to the moment almost everyone else misses.

Vale Beverley (Bev) Greig, 1941–2026

We're saddened to share the passing of Bev Greig, whose work as Regional Arts Officer through the 1980s and 90s helped shape the organisation we are today.

During her career with the Arts Council of WA and later ArtsWA, Bev managed regional touring, regional arts funding, and helped shape policy that ultimately led to the formation of Country Arts WA, now Regional Arts WA. She was a strong advocate for ensuring decisions about regional arts were made by the people who live and work in regional communities, a principle that continues to guide our work today. Bev will be remembered by those with long histories in the regional arts sector for her warmth, generosity and unwavering support for regional artists, organisations and communities. Her contribution will be remembered with gratitude, respect and deep appreciation.

Regional Arts WA are hosting an information session on the Arts Activities in Regional Communities grant program, joined by the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS). Learn about funding opportunities and application tips, with the CITS Regional Grants team on hand to share information and answer your questions.

Arts Activities in Regional Communities grant program funds projects that support participation in, access to, and creation of arts and culture in regional Western Australia.

👉 The Creative Projects category provides up to $60,000 for arts and cultural activities and creative developments in regional WA, including creative workshops, festivals and community-led creative projects.
👉 The Creative and Cultural Planning category provides up to $50,000 for regional local governments to develop creative and cultural plans or revise existing plans.
👉 Applications close 1 October 2026 for projects starting from 15 January 2027.

This program is supported by the WA Government through the Regional Creative Industries Fund

🎭🎨 Round 2 of the Kids Access All Areas Vouchers program is now open!

Families can claim a $50 voucher for eligible children aged 5 to 15 years, with up to 4 vouchers available per family, to attend arts and cultural events across Western Australia.

With more than 100 participating venues and providers, there are plenty of opportunities for children to experience theatre, music, exhibitions and more.

Claiming a voucher is easy:
✅ Reserve your voucher(s)
✅ Purchase tickets to an eligible arts or cultural event
✅ Upload your tax invoice to claim your rebate

The easiest way to claim is through the ServiceWA app via the Offers tab. Alternative application methods are also available.

🎨 Behind the Scenes: Sylvia Wilson

Our new feature shines a spotlight on the arts workers who keep regional WA's creative sector running: curators, admin staff, event organisers and so many more.

First up: Sylvia Wilson, a curator who works tirelessly to exhibit other artists' work, all while maintaining her own practice!

This year alone, Sylvia has curated two exhibitions which you can still catch: Bugai Whyoulter: Desert Spirit at 8 Hele Gallery and Powerhouse Wanti II at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio in Port Hedland.

Sylvia’s first solo exhibition of her own work, Wanti Yuu, has just opened at Mosman Art Gallery.

Fancy a part-time job where no two days are quite the same?

Southern Forest Arts is looking for an enthusiastic and organised Events Manager to join the team and help bring fantastic arts experiences to communities across the Southern Forests region. The successful applicant needs to reside in the Southern Forests & Valleys region.

The role includes coordinating and delivering our diverse program of touring performances in different towns across the region, working with artists, venues and communities, and helping everything come together behind the scenes.

You’ll also develop and deliver an exciting pilot program, Young Creatives, supporting opportunities for young people to get involved in the arts.

We’re looking for someone who:
✨ Is a great organiser and communicator
✨ Can juggle lots of different things (and keep smiling!)
✨ Enjoys working with artists, venues and communities
✨ Is confident with administration and keeping things on track
✨ Is happy working independently as well as part of a team
✨ Has plenty of initiative and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves
✨ Has previous experience in Events Management and Community Development
