Fairy terns have returned for their annual breeding season, and Point Walter remains one of the most successful nesting sites in the Perth metro area.
Letโs help keep it that way ๐
These threatened birds nest between October and January, laying tiny eggs directly in the sand above the high-tide mark.

Even a brief approach can cause adults to flee, leaving eggs and chicks exposed to predators and harsh conditions.

โ Stay behind the temporary fencing
๐ฃ Avoid landing boats, kayaks, paddleboards or kite surfing near the sandbar
๐พ Keep dogs away - theyโre prohibited at Point Walter & Blackwall Reach Reserves
๐ Keep cats indoors - chicks are often preyed upon by roaming cats
With fewer than 3000 breeding pairs estimated in WA, every nest matters, thats why DBCA and the City of Melville are working together to protect these vulnerable migratory birds.
Enjoy the view, but give the fairy terns space to nest and thrive.
