IEEE Student Branch News:
👉 ICT And Engineering Departments (Serco), Facilities Management and Workforce Services at Fiona Stanley Hospital, One of Australia’s Most Advanced Tertiary Hospitals arranged a Site Visit for UWA & Murdoch University IEEE Student Branches.
On 2 April 2025, ICT And Engineering Departments (Serco), Facilities Management and Workforce Services at Fiona Stanley Hospital, arranged a Site Visit for UWA And Murdoch University IEEE Student Branches to gain insight into the advanced healthcare infrastructure and operational efficiency. The visit included a summary of the ICT department, tour of key areas such as the Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) system and the Central Energy Plant (CEP).
ICT department provided a summary of their operations and conducted a tour of key areas, including the Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) system. Engineering and ICT students were introduced to the hospital’s use of AGVs and how automation improves efficiency in healthcare logistics.
The AGV team offered insights into the robot and the logistic of AGV applications including their interaction with objects.
The AGV system at Fiona Stanley Hospital is designed to streamline logistics and reduce the need for manual labour to lift or carry heavy items. These self-navigating robots transport linen and supplies throughout the hospital. The system operates on pre-programmed routes, using sensors to avoid obstacles and ensure safe navigation.
The Engineering Department emphasised the importance of energy management in maintaining critical hospital operations. During the tour, students were introduced to the Central Energy Plant (CEP), which supplies Fiona Stanley Hospital with dual feed power, water, and gas. This demonstration highlighted the essential role of the CEP in ensuring the hospital's continuous and reliable operation.
Students appreciated the opportunity to see real-world applications of their coursework and future career. Positive feedback on the interactive session, which provided valuable career insights.
The site visit was indeed a success, offering students a comprehensive view of the hospital's ICT and engineering operations. The collaboration between Fiona Stanley Hospital and the IEEE Student branches fostered a deeper understanding of the technological and engineering challenges in a healthcare environment.
