Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in web3 blockchain innovation and regulated crypto adoption, surpassing expectations in the international context. Ukrainian developers are considered world experts in this field and have played a significant role in the creation of many Australian web3 startups. The vibrant Ukrainian web3 tech scene offers a plethora of opportunities to learn, and we are pleased to welcome the Ukrainian ambassador in Australia, Mr Vasyl Myroshnychenko, to share more about it at our WA WEB3 Conference.
While the Reserve Bank of Australia, together with Digital Finance CRC, is working on CBDC, the Commonwealth Treasury is pursuing clearer regulatory frameworks for web3 digital assets and decentralized technologies to create new job opportunities, attract talent, and increase income from taxes. Ukraine has already walked this path.
Ukraine's experience in legalising and regulating crypto can serve as a valuable example for other countries. Ukraine is the first state in the world to have digital passports as legal counterparts to paper documents one of the first to legalise cryptocurrency and virtual assets, and it is working on a regulatory framework for the virtual asset market.
It is no surprise that Ukraine, with its clear regulatory frameworks, is home to a thriving tech industry with a large and skilled talent pool, contributing between 3-5% to the country's GDP. Ukrainian-founded Web3 startups have raised nearly $1 billion in investments over the past years alone. Some of the leading global Web3 projects created by Ukrainian developers include Trust Wallet and Solana. The institutions do not shy away from blockchain technologies, as the National Bank of Ukraine has been exploring its own CBDC on the blockchain by Stellar Development Foundation since 2018, and the new legislation considers a future CBDC to be functionally equal to cash or other payment tools.
The Ukrainian ambassador in Australia invited by Mayor Fiona Argyle (City of Nedlands) will attend the WA WEB3 Conference to share the success story of Ukraine's vibrant web3 tech scene and explore potential collaborations with WA's businesses and policymakers.
