A US Ranger Vietnam veteran, serving in Rhodesia as a private security guard (and probably a BSAP Reservist) at a ranch near the Mozabqiue border. Trusty U*i, in his hand. A well known photo from Soldier of Fortune magazine back in the 80’s.

Dana Scheunemann adds: "They were called Bright Lights. Many of the larger holdings had an on-site kraal where the farmer's black labour force and their families lived. There was usually a school and a general goods store as well. The main house was normally surrounded by chain-link fencing with a gate once things got bad in certain areas. The kraals were targetted so the terrs could grab teenaged males and force them into their ranks as child soldiers and steal supplies. Murders of those elders that objected took place as well. Ergo: the Bright Lights, most of which were police reservists!"

Join us at the 13th Brigade Open Day!

On 14 March 2026, Irwin Barracks will open to the community as the Australian Army marks 125 years of service to the nation.

For more than a century, the Army has stood ready in defence of Australia and its interests. This milestone reflects the service of generations of Australians who have worn the uniform, from the earliest formations through Gallipoli, the Western Front, the Pacific, and deployments in contemporary operations.

The Open Day provides an opportunity for the Western Australian community to observe military capability displays and engage with current serving personnel.

Those who serve today continue a legacy built on duty and commitment. Their readiness, and that of their families who support them, honours those who have gone before.
