MOTION BY THE OCEAN INC. Proud to deliver Cycling Without Age Sorrento
Our Vision is for
A LOCAL COMMUNITY THAT IS STRONG & VIBRANT, WHERE EVERYONE FEELS INCLUDED. Our Mission is that
WE DELIVER INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY-BASED ACTIVITIES THAT ACKNOWLEDGE UNMET NEEDS. Our Founder and Our Story
Alanagh Godderidge is the Founder and CEO of the local charity Motion by the Ocean Inc. and a pioneer of the Cycling Without Age movement in Western Australia. The light bulb moment for her came in July 2017, after watching a Youtube video of a Scottish medical student taking two ladies out on a trishaw ride. Having lived in Perth’s beautiful northern coastal suburbs for more than 30 years, it became obvious to her that this was a service her community could embrace. After discovering the worldwide Cycling Without Age movement and collaborating with local supporter Alicia Gangemi, they gathered support from local businesses, local government, their Federal member and the local community to purchase W.A's first purpose-built trishaw. Cycling Without Age Sorrento was born. The initial plan was simply to offer daily, free rides to our senior and less mobile communities along the shared path at West Coast Drive, from Sorrento to Trigg. Such was the fantastic response from the local community, it was soon realised more could be offered to support a stronger community. In addition to this service - in 2019, in collaboration with a handful of other local like-minded individuals, the charity Cycling Without Age Australia was formed. Being an advisory body to provide advice to other Australian communities, as to how they can set up similar trishaw programs. Once the charity was established, Alanagh stepped away from the national Cycling Without Age organisation and focused her attention on Cycling Without Age Sorrento, expanding its services to better meet the needs of her coastal community. The trigger to expand the Cycling Without Age Sorrento initiative came during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. During the lockdown, Alanagh and her team had to suspend their trishaw rides. Being no longer able to take our senior and less mobile community members out for a healthy dose of fresh air and good company, they realised isolation and insecurity would be a major concern. If people can’t get out and about, how will they maintain their mental wellbeing? How will they get the food, supplies and support they need? Diversification! From moving people, we began moving other things around the community. We began our Moving Food program, delivering food hampers to those who needed them - and simply checking in with people to see if they are doing okay. During 2020 we experienced first-hand how much the community benefits from a little kindness and consideration. This expansion led us to create the charity Motion by the Ocean Inc., the collective you see today. While Trishaw rides remain our primary service, Motion by the Ocean Inc. complements this with the food hamper delivery service, partnerships with local fundraising groups, supporting community events, youth training, and bringing our seniors and younger community members together as pen pals. Motion by the Ocean Inc. is all about the northern suburbs coastal community coming together as a collective to help and support each other. Where Cycling Without Age is a global movement, Motion by the Ocean Inc. is all about our locals, our story, and bringing out the best in people in our neighbourhoods. Trishaw rides are simply part of the journey. will continue to grow and reach even more people. We have three Trishaws in service. One running between Mullaloo and Ocean Reef on Tuesdays and two others providing daily rides between Sorrento and Trigg. We provide rides to those who live independently in their own homes, group homes and to nursing homes and disability services and their carers. We anticipate another two Trishaws arriving in April, 2023. Our priority is then to secure a major sponsor that will allow us to have our Trishaw fleet available to deliver Trishaw rides within the Sorrento Quay precinct. As of August, we've had 8200 Trishaw passengers, close to nudging 60,000 passenger kilometres, the same distance as from Perth to Copenhagen return, TWICE! Our Moving Food program has been a stand out too; delivering 44 500 meals to our seniors and vulnerable people. This satisfying and meaningful journey has allowed us to make countless friends along the way too!
