Borderless Friendship Western Australia - BFWA Borderless Friendship Western Australia (BFWA) - enhancing the lives of hill tribe children in Northern Thailand HOW ARE THE FUNDS BEING USED?

BORDERLESS FRIENDSHIP FOUNDATION (THAILAND)

Borderless Friendship Foundation (BFF) was formed by nine community based organizations working with 9 ethnic groups in remote areas of Northern Thailand. BFF is working with 350-400 communities that cross to Sub Mekong region countries. Communities include: Lahu, Hmong, Akha, Karen and Lisu. We work with people in rural Thailand and our neighboring bor

der countries. BFF works in partnership with Borderless Friendship Western Australia (BFWA). Borderless Friendship Foundation was registered on July 27, 2009 in Chiang Mai, Thailand and BFWA was incorporated in 2010. Both groups are not-for-profit organisations run by volunteers. VISION

To promote moral and ethical related activities for families and local communities. To promote education and human rights for local people regardless of age, race, gender or geographical areas. To promote local wisdom about preserving the environment and natural resources. To engage local farmers in passing on knowledge and resources to other vulnerable people. To partner with national and international organizations. BORDERLESS FRIENDSHIP WA (AUSTRALIA)

Borderless Friendship WA Inc (BFWA) is a not-for-profit Western Australian organisation that enhances the lives of hill tribe children in Northern Thailand. The hill tribe people live in remote areas scattered across Northern Thailand with little or no access to education. This lack of education makes the hill tribe children prone to poverty and vulnerable to exploitation within Thailand’s ubiquitous s*x and drug trade. Those who can get an education grow up able to take much better care of themselves, their families and their community (Source: UN). We support more than 450 ‘at risk’ children, most of these children have no parents or family to support them. BFWA receives no government funding. We completely rely on raising funds by selling handicrafts (made by hill tribe people), running street stalls at various markets, organising fundraising events and YOUR donations. Every cent is valuable and carefully put to best use. Over 97% of ALL fundraising goes directly to projects in Thailand. KEY AREAS OF EXPENDITURE

Education – scholarships for secondary school and university, Mooditj* workshops

Safe accommodation (so they can continue at school), nutritious food and essential clothing
* We work with hill tribe people to deliver the award-winning Mooditj program. The content includes: self-identity; puberty and caring for your body; understanding emotions; enhancing relationships; s*xual issues such as STIs; s*xual rights and protective behaviours; parenting; and identifying goals and dreams. Funding also provides food, safe accommodation, sustainable agriculture, purchased livestock for the hostels, dug fish ponds for aquaculture, placed resources in schools and built water tanks to irrigate crops.

HASHTAGS: *xuality

Nominated by: Soroptimist International South Perth

Dr Lorel Mayberry. Healthy Relationships Workshop with Teenagers: Thailand.

The Mooditj (Noongar meaning the ‘best/solid’) program in Northern Thailand equips hill tribe teenagers (especially girls) and their caregivers with essential knowledge and practical skills that supports their daily lives, strengthens relationships and helps safeguard them from s*x trafficking, abuse, early parenting and s*xually transmissible infections.

Outcomes include: • Young people and carers expressed their enthusiasm for the safe, engaging and informative workshops. • Confidence increased to ask questions and speak about issues relating to s*xuality with friends and family. • Empowered to remain at school, engage in safe s*x, and not ‘marry early’.

The impact of the Mooditj education extends far beyond the hundreds of young people who have participated. These young people become peer educators, sharing their knowledge with friends, siblings, teachers and their wider community—multiplying the program’s reach and influence.

“I am proud to create more awareness about our work with vulnerable hill tribe children/young people in Northern Thailand. Our work aligns perfectly with Soroptimists International to enable, educate and empower,” Lorel said.

“If I was fortunate enough to win the SI Award for Achievement the money would enable Borderless Friendship WA to continue our relationship and s*xuality education workshops for teenagers. Our workshops are culturally aware and evidence-based.

“Together with young hill tribe facilitators, we have empowered more than 700 teenagers and their caregivers with this information. BFWA usually has to fund raise for other essential items (mosquito nets, shoes, un**es, clean water) so to be able to get the money to provide 2 workshops would be fantastic. Life changing not only for the participants - they are empowered to educate their peers, families and communities.”
