Tom Malone Glass Art Prize

Tom Malone Glass Art Prize TMP celebrates the interplay of light, complexity of form and mastery of Australian Glass Artists.

08/06/2026

Art and Industry, or Art in Industry.

Industrial innovation becomes even more impressive when you see the craftsmanship behind the process.

Turning raw glass into a chemical reactor isn’t just manufacturing, it’s a combination of engineering, precision, and skilled production at an entirely different level.

From shaping the glass to building equipment designed to withstand extreme chemical environments, every step reflects the expertise behind industrial-grade reliability.

Here’s what makes the process worth watching:
✅ Raw glass transformed into a highly specialized industrial reactor
✅ Precision heating and shaping techniques to ensure durability and performance
✅ Skilled craftsmanship combined with advanced engineering standards
✅ A manufacturing process built for safety, resistance, and long-term use in demanding environments

Today’s industrial buyers expect more than functionality.

They need equipment that delivers reliability, precision, and performance under pressure. Behind every high-performing product is a process designed to meet those expectations.

I’m beyond delighted to announce that my piece Quiescent Object : Kepler 186f has been selected as the winning work of the Tom Malone Prize 2025.

My sincere appreciation and gratitude to the judges, Stefano Carboni, Robert Cook and Dante Marioni for making what would have been a challenging task given the extraordinary work in this year’s shortlist.

Heartfelt thanks to Catarina Tognon, Neil Cownie, Gabriella Bisetto, Tom Rowney and Marc Leib for selecting the shortlist. It’s an extraordinary collection of works, complex, diverse and refreshing to see so many independent artists included. 🙏 Thankyou.

To Elizabeth Malone, thankyou for your vision, enduring support and passion for seeing contemporary glass flourish across all of Australia.

To Sheryl Grimwood, thankyou for your ongoing dedication, commitment and engagement in making our work visible nationally and internationally. Your tireless work is most appreciated by so many of us. Thankyou.

To all at Linton and Kay for presenting the work with so much care and thought. The show looks amazing!

I’m honoured to be amongst such an extraordinary community of makers, and honoured to now have a piece acquired into the AGWA collection.

Thankyou Anne, for all your support, insight and unwavering commitment to both yours and my work. Couldn’t be doing this without you.

I’m most deeply honoured and humbled.

As things are heating up over at for the upcoming I thought I’d post a little throwback to my last entry a few years back.
I had the absolute pleasure of talking to the owner recently and they shared these stunning shots and also included a photo of a real huntsman who has been terrorising the household. I don’t know which spider would be the larger one?

Dr. Stefano Carboni is a native of Venice, a specialist in Islamic art and museum strategies, leadership and management. A part-time Lecturer in Art History and Curatorial Studies at the University of Western Australia, (2011 to present), immediate past Director and CEO, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth, (2008 - 2019), and Knighted by the President of the Republic of Italy: Cavaliere all’Ordine del Merito della Repubblica Italiana (2023).

His research, lectures and publications span several areas of Islamic art, with a particular emphasis on glass studies and the art-historical relationship between the Islamic world, Europe, and Asia. His interest in glass began when, as a student at the University of Venice, he delivered his first public lecture about the historical and artistic relationship between Venetian and Islamic glass. His most significant contributions to the field are the exhibition and accompanying catalogue Glass of the Sultans, held at the Corning Museum of Glass, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Benaki Museum in 2001-2002 (in collaboration with David Whitehouse); the catalogue of the Islamic glass collection in the National Museum of Kuwait (Glass from Islamic Lands, 2001); Mamluk Enamelled and Gilded Glass from the collection of the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, Qatar (2003); and a large number of specialized articles published since 1989. He has also lectured widely on the subject in the course of his career. He is currently working on a comprehensive catalogue raisonné of the 14th-century Mamluk enamelled and gilded mosque lamps, to be published in 2029.

While at AGWA Carboni was inspirational in supporting the Tom Malone Glass Art Prize, and with his background stepped in Venice, Islamic Art and Glass, and 11 years experience of the Prize, Carboni’s experience and passion for Glass Art is highly respected.
