This month’s ANZFSS WA Member Spotlight is Charlie Russo, guest speaker 📢 at the ANZFSS WA Forensic Forum!

🧪 Charlie Russo – Current Manager of Operations at the Forensic Science Laboratory at ChemCentre and previous Manager of the Racing Chemistry Laboratory, having served as the President of the Association of Official Racing Chemists as well as on other committees.

Why do you do it?
The work has always been challenging with new methods and techniques emerging every day and to explore how to use them to solve the problems that are presented. Whether it helps in solving a crime or detecting abuse of drugs in the community. It's our way of keeping the community safe.

Favourite forensic fact!
How not finding something can be as important as finding it? Realising that we often don't know or need to know anything on the background of the samples, we can just examine them without any preconceived notion of the result and report what we see.

What makes you get up in the morning?
The people I work with and the ever-changing landscape in forensic science. Bringing on board new ways of examining forensic evidence. There is always someone keen to help solve any problems you may encounter.

If I could change one thing…
That everyone would consider others and treat them as they would like to be treated. Also, a way to eliminate cars and find a safer way of getting around!

📅 To come see Charlie and a number of forensic experts presenting what they’re working on, come to the ANZFSS WA Forensic Science Forum on Friday 23rd October – register at this link:

It’s time for another ANZFSS WA Member Spotlight!

🧬Lilijana Nicholls - PhD candidate at Murdoch University researching environmental DNA (eDNA)

Why do you do it?
I love doing research to discover new knowledge and learn more about what we can do with DNA. I particularly enjoy environmental DNA because of its overlap in disciplines. eDNA can be used for biosecurity, ecology, biodiversity, wildlife crime, agriculture, and a range of other fields.

Favourite forensic fact!
There are more camels on the Nullarbor than in Saudi Arabia, because they are a massively invasive species in Australia.

What makes you get up in the morning?
I love working in the lab and getting into the rhythm and flow of the work. Being able to trial a new experiment and see the results is really enjoyable. Working towards a PhD and knowing that I'm creating new knowledge and discovering things no one has ever discovered before is really exciting.

If I could change one thing…
Increased participation in citizen science could help us collect data across the world, while encouraging lifelong learning and sharing scientific knowledge and research with the wider community.
