How B&B came about
My name is Nikki, I am the founder and treasurer of ‘Bolts’ & Bruiser’s Bed & Breakfast’, or ‘B&B Rescue’ for short. B&B Rescue was named as a non-profitable charity in early 2016; however, I started on my endeavour to help rehome unwanted and abused cats and kittens after rescuing my first litter back in the November of 2013. Having had experience in the pet industry since 1997, my eyes were opened to the world of neglect that so many felines suffer daily; I was given the opportunity to help rehome these beautiful kittens and thus started my journey to running my very own cat rescue group. Before I started my own group, my initial aim was just to act as a foster carer for already established rescue organisations. During this time I became familiar with so many other people and groups who wanted to help rescue animals for the same reasons as I did, one rescue group in particular was Friendly K9 Rescue. Although, predominately a dog rescue, FK9 gave me the opportunity to come out to the local animal shelters and pounds to see how they rescued the animals directly from death row. After that visit I knew that I needed to be further involved, I saw these felines on the euthanizing list, some just for the simple fact of over-crowding, and I wanted to be able to offer them a better chance in life. As I held a job at Aquatic Pet; a pet shop in Penrith, I wondered if there was anything that my employer may be able to do to help me save these animals in need, so I began asking questions. Within a few months FK9 had taken its first cat from the pound and we were fostering it in the store until it was adopted. A perfect way to bring bulk awareness to suffering animals, and to open up the customers mind to the idea of saving a life. As there are so many felines to save, Aquatic Pet were running out of room to house all the cats that I felt needed my help, soon enough I had multiple cats taking up residence in my own home where I fed and cared for them until they could be desexed and there was a place for them at work. As I became adjusted to my new home schedule it soon became a fast, constant cycle of rescuing, feeding, cleaning, vet visits and then adopting. I am now setup to house up to approximately 20 cats and counting. As of the December of 2015, I officially started calling myself ‘B&B Rescue’. I named my rescue after my own pets that I saved along the way – Bruiser; my Great Dane mix, who I adopted from Renbury Farm, just before he was due to be euthanised. And Bolts, my cat, who I decided to adopt from that very first litter I saved back in 2013. I was recently told that the records at work show during January 2016 to January 2017 Aquatic Pet had adopted out at least 70 of the cats that were under my care at B&B rescue, I am now determined to add to those figures in the years to come. I’ve finally figured out that rescuing cats is how I plan to spend the rest of my working life; however, I am more than happy to go further than the care of cats and offer my help to all other animals where I can. I am offering a lifetime guarantee to all my animals that I rehome, so if at any point their owners can no longer care for them due unforeseen circumstances, I will do my best to either make space for them or find someone that can. Thank you for taking the time out to visit and support my page, if you have any enquires about any of my cats please feel free to contact me at work on 4703 4986, or you can privately message this page or Aquatic Pets page. If you wish to donate, I have a funds donation box on Aquatic Pet’s store counter; any donation great or small is so greatly appreciated.
