We’re getting very close now!

We want Afford 75 Years Together to be the kind of community event where you can stay for the whole afternoon.

We’ll have extra shade and seating around the oval, along with activities, entertainment, food and plenty of space to simply sit down and catch up with people.

We’ll also have a quiet space inside the community centre for anyone who needs some time away from the noise and activity outside.

Come for half an hour or make a day of it. There’s plenty happening from 11am right through to 3pm.

And best of all, the event and activities are free.

The U-klectics will be playing live from 1pm to 3pm, bringing four strings and a whole lot of energy to Thornton.

This eclectic group of friends puts its own spin on R&B, rock ’n’ roll, country and folk, with plenty of familiar songs you’ll know and love to sing along to.

With beats, loops and vocal harmonies in the mix, don’t expect to spend the whole afternoon sitting down. Dancing is very much encouraged. 💃🕺

The U-klectics are passionate about bringing music into the community and regularly perform at festivals and community events.
Come find a shady spot on the oval, enjoy the music and, if the mood strikes, get up for a dance.

We have a great line-up of speakers joining us next Saturday, all with their own connections to Afford, Penrith and our local community.

First up, we’re delighted to welcome Karen McKeown OAM MP, Member for Penrith.

Karen knows Thornton particularly well and has been a wonderful supporter of the community.

She’ll be sharing a few words about the strength of Penrith and the importance of creating places where people with disability are welcomed, included and able to thrive.

And judging by these photos, we’re not entirely sure Karen actually needs directions to Thornton. 😂

From Halloween celebrations to knocking on doors and catching up with locals, she’s a pretty familiar face around the neighbourhood.

We’re looking forward to welcoming her back next Saturday, this time to help us celebrate Afford’s 75 years.

We’re honoured to welcome Uncle Colin Locke to Afford 75 Years Together to perform our Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.

Uncle Colin is a Dharug Elder from the Buruberongal clan of the Dharug nation and a proud Dharug man.

Born and raised in the Blue Mountains, Uncle Colin is directly related to Yarramundi, leader of the Buruberongal clan. He has represented the Dharug people as a recognised Elder for more than 15 years and serves on a number of boards and committees representing the Dharug nation.

We’re very grateful to have Uncle Colin open our formal proceedings and help us begin this special celebration in the right way.

We have a very special Thornton local taking charge of the main stage for Afford 75 Years Together!

Kevin Finlayson will be our MC for the day, and his connection to both Afford and our community goes back a very long way.

Kevin was supported by Afford more than 40 years ago, when he lived at our former Cherrywood village and began his career through Afford’s employment programs.

He went on to build a career in mainstream employment and live a truly independent life. Today, he lives right here in Thornton and has become a highly respected lived-experience disability advocate.

And after all these years, he remains one of Afford’s biggest cheerleaders. 💙
We couldn’t think of anyone better to help us celebrate 75 years of people, community and possibility.
