We are sad to share that Penguin Playgroup has closed its doors.
The facility at 46 Main Road has been an early years centre since 1977, creating, supporting, and nurturing the growth of children and families, a strong sense of community, and countless memories. Across generations, the centre has been a valued part of the Penguin community, providing support services, childcare, and playgroups all from one location.
In recent years, Penguin Playgroup has operated as a community-run playgroup, relying on the generous support of volunteers to run Monday sessions. Due to a decline in volunteer availability and session attendance, the difficult decision was made to cease the Playgroup.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported Penguin Playgroup over the years—through attending sessions, volunteering their time, or offering support in other ways.
It was wonderful to see many of the resources accumulated over the years find new homes with early educators and families in the community, allowing them to continue bringing joy to future generations of children. Other items were donated to the Penguin Lions Club to help raise funds for worthy community causes.
Funds will be held in trust for Penguin Playgroup with Playgroup Tasmania, should the community wish to re-establish a playgroup in the future. For more information, please contact Playgroup Tasmania.
During the facility tidy-up, an archive of photographs was discovered. These have been donated to the Penguin History Group, where they can be viewed.
