Pemberton Mill and associated sludge ponds have had this classification for 25 years, within meters of residential homes, within the Main Street AND STILL NO ACTION and NO time frame given for clean up. Although the lease is/ was for 999 years so no holding your breathe. Mind you, we are now promoting ourselves as a “ wellness” destination despite being possibly the MOST contaminated town in the south west. 🤷♀️
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has re-classified a former tannery site in Darkan as "contaminated and remediation required".
A review — prompted by community concerns shared by the Shire of West Arthur — found contaminated soils and sediments.
The Department has asked the owner to remove all remaining infrastructure, undertake further investigations, and provide a definitive Remediation Action Plan by the end of September.
