On Fri 28 Aug at ACE Parramatta, A Western Sydney Book Club is showcasing Plastic Budgie, the semi-autobiographical debut novel by Olivia De Zilva!

Plastic Budgie follows Olivia's unconventional coming-of-age adolescence, bringing together wildly bizarre experiences and deeply tender moments to masterfully craft a story of how our memories form who we become.

Poet, critic and writer Hellai Gul will be leading the conversation of Olivia De Zilva's unapologetically sentimental and eternally surprising debut novel.

Come have your say in the discussion! The event is free, but bookings are essential to reserve your place. Secure one now via the link in our bio.

This month, A Western Sydney Book Club is back, with Hellai Gul presenting Plastic Budgie, the brutally funny and inventive debut novel by Olivia De Zilva.

Plastic Budgie is full of Y2K nostalgia, curses and glimpses of birds. As a genre-defying and wonderfully crafted semi-autobiography, De Zilva showcases how memories form our identities in a way that is both unapologetically sentimental and eternally surprising.

July’s book is 'Kontra' by Eunice Andrada.

A bold and formally assured work of opposition, intimacy and dissent, 'Kontra' draws on the figure of the kontrabida - the Filipina soap opera villainess often punished for wanting. Across the collection, Andrada’s poems move through desire, refusal, power and the possibilities of another future.

Join A Western Sydney Book Club at ACE Parramatta on Friday 31 July, 6:30pm - 8pm, for a conversation led by James Jiang. Whether you’ve read every page or are just beginning with Kontra, this is a chance to gather, listen and think together. Register now via the link in bio to save your place
