Volume Four of the Stories to Solutions series showcases some of the 2025 ZEST Awards winners, highlighting the impact that their work has had on Western Sydney communities.

Issue One introduces… Young Mums and Bubs, a group comprised of mothers and their young children aged five and under. Delivered by Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation and winner of the ZEST 2025 Award for Outstanding First Nations Community Initiative, this group creates opportunities for young mums to learn, grow and share knowledge in a safe, innovative and cooperative space. Young Mums and Bubs utilises community based co-creation and a culturally responsive intergenerational model to shape the nature and direction of the group.

This National Reconciliation Week, we stand in deep respect and allyship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Western Sydney and beyond.

At Western Sydney Community Forum, we are incredibly proud to walk alongside community members, leaders and organisations across Western Sydney, sharing in the strength, stories and connection to Country that are woven through the projects we support. From the ZEST Awards to local initiatives, we are privileged to celebrate these partnerships every day, especially during this important week.

On Tuesday, our team had the honour of attending a National Sorry Day event hosted by the City of Parramatta.

Throughout this week, we continue to support local National Reconciliation Week events, recognising that reconciliation is not just a moment, it is an ongoing commitment. This year's theme, All In, is a reminder that reconciliation is not just a one-off action, by one individual, it requires all of us to step forward, take action and share responsibility for creating lasting change.

At Western Sydney Community Forum, we pay our respects to Elders past and present, acknowledge past and ongoing injustices, and commit to walking alongside First Nations peoples.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we recognise the enduring pain, strength, and resilience of the Stolen Generations and their families. This day provides an important opportunity for reflection, to acknowledge that the impacts of forced removals continue to be felt across generations, and that systemic racism and discrimination persist today.

26 May marks 29 years from the delivery of the Bringing Them Home report, the final report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families. This landmark report gave those affected a platform to share their stories, deepening national understanding of the impacts of these policies and strengthening the call for truth, healing, and justice. Yet, of the 83 recommendations made to address the harm caused by these government policies, only 5 recommendations have been fully implemented.

National Sorry Day is a time for acknowledgment, truth, and ongoing reflection on our shared responsibility to support healing and change.

The Parliament of NSW is conducting an Inquiry into the Human Rights Bill 2025 and Western Sydney Community Forum will be making a submission to this Inquiry and we are keen to hear from you and from your organisation’s perspective to inform our submission.

Western Sydney Community Forum is seeking input from organisations, service providers, and community leaders across Western Sydney to help inform our submission on the proposed NSW Human Rights Bill 2025.

We are hosting an online roundtable discussion on Wednesday 27 May and invite you to join us:
Where: Online
Time: 2pm – 3:30pm

Western Sydney Community Forum’s consultation will focus on:
- Understanding how communities across Western Sydney experience and understand human rights in everyday life.
- Exploring where gaps, barriers, or shortcomings exist across systems and services, particularly around dignity, safety, participation, access to support, and awareness of rights.
- Discussing the role the community services sector can play in supporting and protecting the rights of communities across Western Sydney, and what meaningful human rights implementation could look like in practice.

To register your participation, please contact Fynnola Murphy at [email protected].

If you are unable to attend this session and wish to contribute, please reach out by Tuesday 26 May and we will organise a time convenient for you to have a discussion.

We welcome the Daily Telegraph recognition of our CEO Billie Sankovic as a key policy shaper in greater Western Sydney. For far too long, investment in services and infrastructure in the region has lagged. Despite it being home for more than half the population of Sydney. Our work as the regional peak social development council, addresses these historical inequities, tackles the tough challenges, and brings the right people together to power the future of Western Sydney.

YOUR EXPERIENCE MATTERS: SURVEY ON FUNDING, REPORTING AND COMMUNITY OUTCOMES IN WESTERN SYDNEY

Western Sydney Community Forum, in partnership with researchers at UNSW Sydney, are conducting a survey examining how place-based services in Western Sydney are contributing to community outcomes, managing reporting and accountability requirements, and responding to current funding pressures.

We are inviting senior leaders of place-based community service organisations operating in Western Sydney to take part.

You may take part if you:
- Are aged 18 years or older
- Hold a senior leadership role (for example, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director, General Manager or equivalent); and
- Have oversight of organisational strategy, funding arrangements, reporting requirements and service delivery.

Participation is voluntary. It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete the anonymous online survey. The questions are designed to be answered based on your informed judgement as a senior leader.

The findings will help the Forum better represent members’ experiences and advocate for policy and funding settings that strengthen community outcomes across Western Sydney.

A full description of the research, including what participation involves and how your information will be handled, is provided in the Participant Information Statement at the link below.

If you would like to take part, please follow the link.

As demand across the human services sector continues to grow, the role of local, place‑based organisations has never been more critical.

Western Sydney Community Forum is proud to partner with integrated and place‑based organisations across the region to release Nurturing Communities from the Ground Up, a new publication that highlights the real impact of these organisations in Western Sydney.

Through lived experiences of service users and the perspectives of the organisations providing support, this publication showcases how community‑led, place‑based approaches are strengthening communities and responding to complex local needs.

Nurturing Communities from the Ground Up demonstrates why investing in local knowledge, trust, and collaboration is essential to building resilient and thriving communities.

On Friday Western Sydney Community Forum was lucky enough to visit another one of our member organisations, NADO Disability & Aged Care, in Penrith. As a non‑profit community organisation, NADO supports people with disability and older people to live independently and remain connected to their communities, with a strong focus on person‑centred, place‑based services.

It was wonderful to hear about the ways that NADO is working to support the people of Western Sydney, including delivering locally responsive disability and aged care services, supporting choice and independence, and building strong relationships with individuals, carers and the broader community.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Executive Officer Denise Heath and everyone at NADO for their time welcoming us, chatting about the work that they do, and sharing their priorities for the region.
