SAMSN SAMSN: Australia’s leading organisation for male survivors of child sexual abuse and their supporters Unable to find such a group, they started SAMSN.

Survivors & Mates Support Network was founded in 2010 by a small group of male survivors, who were searching for a support group to meet other male survivors and deal with the effects of child sexual abuse on their lives. Working alongside professional counsellors with experience in working with male survivors, they commenced an eight-week group program for men. This professionally-facilitated pee

r support group program provided a much-needed safe space for men; it was (and is still) in great demand. These groups have provided a place for men to come together to meet other male survivors and find support, understanding and learning about child sexual abuse, its far-reaching impacts, and very importantly what helps in recovery and healing. Since 2011 SAMSN has run over 60 groups across Sydney, some regional NSW centres, in Adelaide and Canberra. SAMSN’s growing understanding of these impacts for men, the needs of male survivors, and what helps recovery has led to SAMSN establishing ongoing, professionally facilitated monthly meetings in a number of locations so that men have a safe environment to continue to have peer support in their recovery journey. SAMSN has also recognised that the trauma effects of abuse can make negotiating life’s challenges even more difficult. In 2014 SAMSN was able to employ professional staff to provide individual planned support to men and their supporters. This support includes working alongside survivors negotiating the criminal justice system or seeking redress or compensation, accessing Centrelink or housing services, or finding a suitable counsellor. The value of peer support has also been incorporated into our work with peer support workers available to walk alongside survivors as well as our planned support team. We are proud to see the network continues to grow. In 2019 we were able to begin outreach out to male survivors in more regional areas of NSW and beyond, and particularly our Aboriginal and Torres Strait male survivors to expand our work with the families and friends of survivors. Today, we acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonisation and the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, communities, and cultures.

At SAMSN, we recognise the deep and lasting effects of intergenerational trauma, and we honour the strength and resilience of First Nations peoples.

We take this day to listen, learn, and reflect on the importance of culturally safe, trauma-informed healing.

Access to justice matters - This Law Week (May 2026), we’re recognising the importance of understanding your rights and knowing where to turn for support.

For many men, navigating legal systems — whether related to police reporting, the National Redress Scheme, or victims support processes — can feel complex or overwhelming, especially when layered with the impacts of trauma.

SAMSN’s Planned Support Team can provide trauma‑informed, practical support and advocacy to help men better understand options, prepare for processes, and connect with appropriate services.
While SAMSN is not a legal service, our team can walk alongside you at your own pace and help you navigate systems in ways that feel safer, clearer, and more manageable.

You don’t have to do it alone — support is available, and your choices matter.

Celebrating Volunteers Across Australia for Volunteer Week 2026: “Your Year to Volunteer”
At SAMSN we don't have a volunteer program, however, many of our staff go above and beyond and volunteer extra time, such as Nath, one of our Peer Support Workers who volunteers to drop-in to our Eight-week Support Group and let other men know what it is like after the Group.

Today, SAMSN stands with LGBTQIA+ communities to affirm a simple truth: every child and every person deserves safety, dignity and respect.

Research consistently shows that LGBTQIA+ people experience higher rates of childhood sexual abuse and sexual violence, driven by stigma, discrimination and abuse of power.

Discrimination doesn’t just exclude, it increases risk. Inclusion, acceptance and belief help keep people safer.

At SAMSN, we are committed to supporting all people impacted by childhood sexual abuse, inclusive of sexuality, gender identity and gender expression.

Today we pause to remember and honour all those who have served and who are serving, and those who have been affected by war and conflict.

We also acknowledge that for many people, days of remembrance can stir difficult emotions.

If today feels heavy, you’re not alone. Support is available, and reaching out can make a difference.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2026. 25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward.

For 25 years, Sexual Assault Awareness Month has honoured the strength of survivors and the progress driven by survivor‑led change. It’s a time to reflect on how far we’ve come, and to recommit to the work ahead.

At SAMSN, our belief is clear. Survivors of childhood sexual abuse can recover, support others to thrive, and be leaders for change. Many men live with the impacts of sexual assault for decades before speaking about it. When survivors are believed, supported, and given space to heal, recovery is possible - not only for individuals, but for families, friends, communities, and future generations.

This April, we look back to honour survivors and advocates who paved the way, and we move forward by continuing to challenge stigma, reduce silence, and support men to heal and lead.
