Down Syndrome NSW recently met with Annie from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to talk about the 2026 Census.
We spoke about the right of people with Down syndrome to be part of the Census process, and the different ways people may need support to take part.
This included talking about the different living arrangements of people with Down syndrome, including family homes, and different independent living arrangements, as well as group homes, and how their experience and involvement must be supported in all of these.
We discussed how Census information is received, who may need help to access it, and how families, carers and support workers can support people to complete the form in a way that includes their voice and choices.
We also talked about information already available on the ABS website for people with disability and carers, including Easy Read versions of fact sheets, and how Pop Up Hubs across the country, where people can take the form to get help are a great way to support the process.
Annie was really interested in the way the ABS can assist Pop Up Hub staff and other staff to support and communicate with people with Down syndrome, and we shared examples of communication tools, including our Key Word Sign cards and the Council for Intellectual Disability conversation cards.
Thank you Annie and the Australian Bureau of Statistics for reaching out to find out how to support better access and inclusion in the Census.
