Florey-led research published in the renowned journal Brain shows that the structural effects of brain surgery can extend further than previously thought, challenging the traditional view on how surgery affects the human brain.

The researchers stress that neurosurgery remains a very safe and effective treatment and that advanced MRI imaging could improve neurological interventions even further.

Vale Richard Scolyer

As we mourn the passing of Professor Richard Scolyer AO, The Florey acknowledges the incredible contribution that he has made to cancer research and care.

As a former Australian of the Year, Professor Scolyer was cherished by the nation.

As a world-leading melanoma pathologist, he was widely admired and respected for his expertise and his transformative contributions to the field.

And as someone who lived with brain cancer for the past three years, he was a selfless advocate determined to help others.

The Florey’s Executive Director Professor Peter van Wijngaarden says Professor Scolyer’s loss will be felt worldwide, but his legacy will endure.

“Professor Scolyer’s pioneering contributions, together with fellow Australian of the Year Professor Georgina Long AO, have made significant advances in the treatment of brain cancer, potentially providing new options and giving hope to people worldwide.

“Professor Scolyer faced his brain cancer diagnosis with courage, honesty and optimism, testing new and innovative treatments and giving renewed hope to those living with brain cancer.

“We thank him for his dedication to improving the lives of others and we send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”

The Florey’s leading brain cancer researcher Professor Lucy Palmer says she was inspired by Professor Scolyer.

“As a researcher investigating the neuroscience of brain cancer, I have followed and admired his work and am saddened by the news of his passing.

“Professor Scolyer provided hope for patients and researchers alike, providing a voice for the countless lives impacted by this terrible disease.

“As a brain cancer researcher, I gained inspiration from his approach and will continue to work tirelessly to understand the cellular basis of brain cancer and to highlight new drug targets and therapies.

“He taught us to push the boundaries in brain cancer research, and we know that one day we will shift the dial in patient survival."

Our MND researchers in their blue beanies in support of today’s Big Freeze 12 at the MCG! ❄️

At The Florey, with the support of Fight MND, our researchers are working every day to better understand motor neurone disease and develop new treatments for people living with the disease.

We’re grateful to FightMND and to everyone getting behind this year’s Big Freeze, whose support is helping to make vital brain research possible 💙

Congratulations to our epilepsy researchers Professor Chris Reid, Dr Khaing Phyu Aung, Dr Ming Soh and PhD student Jenna White!

Building on work funded by PURA Foundation Australia, the team was recently awarded funding from PURA Syndrome Foundation as part of its largest-ever investment in global research.

Their project will explore the brain mechanisms behind PURA-related seizures, bringing us closer to new insights and future treatments for people living with PURA syndrome.

We’re proud to see their important work recognised on the global stage 👏

Hitting the headlines: A new Florey study points to the gut as a mediator of brain changes in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) 📰

Florey researchers have found evidence of a possible link between gut bacteria and the brain-related symptoms in NF1, a genetic condition that increases the risk of tumour formation, and can result in cognitive and behavioural difficulties including autism and ADHD.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, lead author Dr Sonali Reisinger said the researchers found significant differences in gut microbiota in mice with NF1 — a discovery they hope could lead to new treatments for people with the condition.

It is with deep sadness that The Florey mourns the passing of FightMND co-founder and former Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher AO.

Neale was an extraordinary ambassador and tireless advocate in the fight against “the Beast” that is motor neurone disease, which he courageously lived with for more than a decade.

Through his powerful advocacy work, Neale helped to raise millions of dollars for researchers in Australia and around the world working to find a cure for MND.

“Neale’s advocacy and relentless determination have mobilised the nation. It is this powerful combination of advocacy and hope founded in research that will stand as Neale’s enduring gift,” Florey Executive Director Professor Peter van Wijngaarden said.
