🌟 COS 2025 FINAL EVENT 🌟

What an incredible way to wrap up the year! 🎉

In our last event of the year, mentees had the opportunity to share their experience and knowledge from our program with their peers 💬

🥼 Alongside our amazing mentors, we were joined by a lineup of special guests from across the scientific community — including lab heads, science illustrators, philanthropy and outreach leaders, venture capital experts, and more. We are immensely grateful to everyone who were able to make it, and it was so great to see you bring your passion for science into the brilliant discussions at the event! 🔬

We hope our mentees walked away with a deeper understanding of medical research and continue to have an interest in science and health literacy 🧑‍🔬

Thank you to all our mentors for taking part in this program!

And of course - a huge thank you to our sponsors and funding partners for making this student-led initiative possible 🧬

🔬 Lab session with our Mentees 🔬

Two weeks ago, we invited our mentees to join us in GTAC for an introduction to lab skills! 👩‍🔬

Before our mentees dive deep into their assigned research projects in the next couple weeks, we wanted them to get some hands-on experience in the lab. 🥼

Our mentees learnt some lab techniques such as gel electrophoresis and ELISA 🔬 , I hope that they now have a better idea of the experiments scientists do on a daily basis! 🧪

🌟 Meet our COS Mentors 🌟

Here is the official list of COS 2025 mentors!

🔬 Our mentors have a variety of research interests - whether it is disease prevention or treating an aggressive disorder, our mentors are excited to share their projects with their mentees! 💬

We are so lucky to have mentors who are passionate in engaging with members of the public to improve scientific and health literacy. Can’t wait to hear all about their science from their mentees!

🎨 Science Illustration WorkshopFor our final COS workshop, we invited Dr. Eddie La Marca to lead a workshop for our mentors on how to visualise their projects for a scientific and non-scientific audience.

🔬 In this workshop, Eddie gave a brilliant summary of the key aspects of what makes a really good scientific illustration, walked through his own experience of designing a figure from scratch, and facilitated a lively discussion based on examples of good and bad scientific illustrations.

Mentors then had the opportunity to pair up and come up with their own scientific illustrations based on a research prompt: Draw a graphical abstract to illustrate a fake research project “The protein REX protects cells from viral infection by binding to the SKK2 receptor” 🖌️ It was lovely to see the engagement and creativity mentors have put into this exercise - have a look at some of the illustrations they made in just 20 minutes! 🤩

Thank you Eddie for an amazing workshop!! 🎨

We are getting closer to our Welcome event, where are mentors finally get to meet with potential mentees of the program Can’t wait to see everyone then! 🧬

🌟 Amazing achievement in science communication 💬

We are SO happy to announce that four of our COS mentors have won the three-minute thesis (3MT) competitions in their institutes, and some are moving on to compete in the MDHS 3MT FINALS 🤩

🎉 Congratulations to our amazing mentors:
Ehsan Ramezani - First place and People’s Choice 🏅 Medical Biology (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute)
Sarah Williams - First place 🏅 Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Priya Kumar - Runner-up and People’s Choice 🏅 Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Salma Naleem - Runner-up 🏅 School of Biomedical Science (Microbiology and Immunology)

💬 3MT contestants compete to explain their PhD projects in lay language in just three minutes, and are judged by creativity and clarity of their presentation.
Seeing as our mentors are winners of this competition shows how their experience is highly valuable in our mentoring program for Citizens of Science 🧬

We are so lucky to have these talented mentors in our team this year 🤩

Once again - congratulations!!

🔬CoS July Workshop with GTAC🔬

For our third mentor session, we invited Dr. Tony Chiovitti, Deputy Director of Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) to run a science communication workshop 💬

This was a fun and interactive workshop where our mentors were tasked to summarise their research projects, while having to simplify scientific terms into lay language 🧬

From bipolar disorder🧠 to liquid biopsies🩸 to malaria🦟, our mentors have done a wonderful job in explaining their research projects to each other in lay terms 🌟

Thank you to all the mentors for participating and engaging in this session 🤩 It was so amazing to see all the work that has been put into refining your science communication skills!!

And a HUGE thank you to Tony for volunteering his time to lead this workshop for the mentors!!
