As we wrapped up the Rotary year, Rotary North Melbourne was delighted to welcome back Chris Hrynevich from the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria.

Many members will remember Chris’s previous visit, where she shared RMIT-supported research capturing the stories and lived experiences of people affected by the war in Ukraine. During that presentation, she spoke about plans to publish a book that would bring these important voices and experiences together.

This time, Chris returned to introduce Many Colours of Home, the newly released book that grew from this research and has already sold out. The book shares powerful stories of resilience, belonging, and finding home in the face of adversity. Through these personal accounts, it shines a light on the people behind the headlines and the challenges they continue to navigate.

If you would like to learn more, join the waiting list, or read the free electronic version, visit:

Thank you, Chris, for sharing these important stories and helping us better understand the human impact of conflict, displacement, and rebuilding lives.

Today’s meeting was a very special one as we officially inducted Deborah Buccolini as a new member of the club. We warmly welcome Deborah to our Rotary family and look forward to her contribution, fellowship, and service in the years ahead.

We were also privileged to hear from our guest speaker, Aimé Saba, Rotary Peace Fellow alumni, whose extraordinary career in humanitarian coordination, peacebuilding, negotiation, and international development spans across multiple UN agencies and conflict-affected regions around the world.

Aimé shared powerful insights from his work supporting humanitarian and emergency operations in countries including Lebanon, Bangladesh, Armenia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Liberia, Zimbabwe and many more. His experience in mediation, humanitarian access negotiations, UN peacekeeping missions, and international development highlighted the complexity of global humanitarian challenges and the importance of diplomacy, collaboration, and peacebuilding.

It was an incredibly informative and inspiring presentation that reminded us of Rotary’s global impact through peace, service, and international understanding.

Thank you, Aimé, for sharing your experiences and insights with us, and welcome once again to Deborah Buccolini.

🌟 Fantastic Presentation by Christine Edwards from Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia) ! 🌟

We had an incredibly inspiring meeting tonight at the Rotary Club of North Melbourne. Our guest speaker, Christine Edwards, delivered a powerful talk on the life-changing work being done by Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect).

Christine's role as the Regional Coordinator for the Eastern Region within Aspect's Adult Community Services division, gave us a deeper look into Aspect's core mission.

💡Understanding, engaging, and celebrating strengths: Shifting the focus to what is possible and embracing a person's unique capabilities.

💡Working in partnership: Collaborating directly with therapists, schools, and individuals to deeply understand and achieve personal goals.

💡Comprehensive service delivery: Providing essential autism assessments, diagnoses, specialised Aspect Schools, and therapy services.

💡Adult Community Services: Creating inclusive futures through social communication and active community engagement—including practical group activities like cooking, baking, gardening, acting, and lawn bowls.

Thank you, Christine, for showcasing how we can all help build a more inclusive, supportive environment where everyone can thrive! 🤝✨

A thoughtful and engaging Rotary North Melbourne meeting this week.
We heard from guest speakers Sophie Shen and Amy Yan from the Rotary Satellite Club of Ending Forced Organ Harvesting, who are working to raise awareness of illegal organ harvesting practices globally. While countries like Australia have strict regulations, this remains a serious issue in parts of the world. In certain countries, medical tourism can make illegal harvesting possible, so it’s important to be aware of this when considering travel for organ transplants. Their mission to educate and inform through films and discussions is both important and impactful.
We were also pleased to welcome two potential new members to the session.
A small group this time, but an insightful and meaningful meeting.

Great to be back at our regular Rotary meeting today, with a fantastic guest speaker, Karl Hessian.
Karl, a 2025 recipient of the Phonse Tobin Award, joined us to share insights into his work with the The Hotham History Project Inc, a passionate community-led initiative dedicated to researching, preserving and sharing the rich history of North and West Melbourne.
The project brings together local volunteers to write, document and publish stories about the area’s past, capturing everything from historic buildings and streets to the people and communities that shaped the suburb. Their work also includes developing accessible online resources and encouraging community contributions to ensure these stories are not lost as the area continues to evolve.
It was inspiring to hear how local history can connect communities, preserve heritage, and give deeper meaning to the place we live in.
A big thank you to Karl for taking the time to share his journey and the important work being done through the Hotham History Project.

Great meeting today at the Rotary Club of North Melbourne.
We welcomed four visiting Rotaractors from the University of Melbourne, along with a former Rotary Club of Richmond member now based in North Melbourne.
Our guest speaker, Deborah Buccolini from CoimpactoB, shared inspiring work from Colombia supporting rural communities.
Highlights included:
- Credimpacto – a community-based financial inclusion model that builds savings groups, provides microloans, and supports local entrepreneurship through training and revolving community funds.
- Aquaponics projects – sustainable farming systems being introduced in water-scarce regions like La Guajira, producing food while using significantly less water and building long-term community resilience.

A powerful reminder of how innovative, community-led solutions can create lasting impact.
Thank you, Deborah, for an engaging presentation.
