🔥 The 2025/26 Fire Permit Period will end statewide tomorrow (Thursday, 9 April 2026).

ℹ️ From 2am tomorrow, if you’re considering burning on your property:
🤝 you don’t require a fire permit
🤝 BUT we encourage you to register your burn by calling 1800 000 699. Registering your burn will ensure your local Tasmania Fire Service brigade are aware of your plans and can respond accordingly.

📍 Remember:
➡️ Anyone conducting a burn must be capable of managing the fire and be mindful of changing weather conditions.
➡️ Make sure an adult is always attending the burn until it is fully extinguished.
➡️ Have suitable working firefighting equipment available to appropriately manage fire activity in the event that the fire begins to spread.
➡️ Never light fires in peat, humus, or marram grass.
➡️ Landowners are responsible for any damage caused by fires escaping their land.
➡️ Ensure your neighbours are aware and that your burn won’t adversely affect their health, or farming operations – particularly the wine industry, which is vulnerable to smoke.
➡️ Burning on private property is governed by local council by-laws and environmental laws about smoke emissions.

Tasmania Fire Service would like to thank the Tasmanian community for their support during the Total Fire Ban and statewide permit suspension period.

Commissioner Jeremy Smith said community cooperation played an important role in reducing the risk of fires during a period of heightened fire danger.

“We are grateful to the Tasmanian community for acting responsibly during the Total Fire Ban and permit suspension period” Commissioner Smith said.

“Any fire that started in the forecast conditions would have been difficult to control and would have posed a significant risk to lives and property.”

“The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled the severe weather warning for damaging winds this afternoon, and while the Total Fire Ban and permit suspension were critical in reducing risk during heightened fire danger, the easing of conditions have provided some relief for communities and firefighters.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain prepared to respond to any incidents that may arise.”

Commissioner Smith said Tasmania Fire Service and our partner agencies are prepared to respond to fires across the landscape this fire season, and encourages every Tasmanian to review their bushfire plan.

“If you don’t have a plan, take the time to head to fire.tas.gov.au to prepare one to keep you and your loved ones safe.”

The Total Fire Ban remains in place until 2am, Sunday 11 January, and a Fire Permit Suspension remains in place statewide until 2am Monday 12 January with no new permits being issued during this time.

“As always, if you see smoke, flames, or anything that looks like a fire re-igniting, please don’t assume someone else has reported it. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

Everyone loves a campfire but it is important to stay campfire safe, especially with the warm weather we are experiencing.🌡️

Use campfires safely when at Hydro Tasmania sites by:
🔥Being prepared! Visit the Hydro Tasmania website (Find a site) to see where campfires are allowed.
🔥Checking fire bans for your dates and locations! These will always trump signage.
🔥 Using designated fire rings or established fireplaces.
🔥 If you’re using a portable fire, keep it on bare earth and stay 3 metres away from vegetation.
🔥 Keeping fires small and not adding man-made rubbish like cans.
🔥 Never leaving a fire unattended.
💧 Soak it, Stir it, Soak it! Use water until it is cool to touch. Don’t use dirt or sand which can hide embers.

If in doubt, leave it for another day – it’s not worth the risk!
