Day 16 – Human Rights Day: Beyond 16 days

Today is Human Rights Day and the final day of the 16 Days of Activism – but our work doesn’t stop here.

The National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022–2032 and the Working for Women strategy set an ambition to end gender-based violence in one generation.
genderequality.gov.au

That will only happen if we all:

Believe and support victim-survivors

Challenge disrespect and inequality wherever we see it

Teach and model healthy, equal relationships

Invest in services, prevention and community-led solutions

Thank you for walking with us over these 16 days. Let’s keep colouring the world orange – not just for 16 days, but every day. 🧡

Day 15 – What Zonta does

Zonta International envisions a world in which no woman lives in fear of violence.

Through the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign, Zonta clubs around the world:

Raise awareness of gender-based violence

Advocate for stronger laws and better systems

Partner with local services and community groups

Support projects that empower women and girls and promote gender equality. Here in Orange, our club works alongside local organisations to promote safety, respect, housing, education and opportunities for women and children in our region.

Day 12 – Workplaces and economic impact

Family and domestic violence is not just a “private” issue – it’s a workplace and economic issue too.

Intimate partner violence contributes to 1.4% of the total burden of disease and injury among Australian women.
DVNSW

It drives:

Lost income and job security

Housing instability and homelessness

Long-term health and mental health impacts

The Australian Government has introduced 10 days paid family and domestic violence leave into the Fair Work Act and placed a positive duty on employers to prevent sexual harassment – important steps toward safer workplaces.

Workplaces in Orange can help by having clear policies, promoting respectful culture and supporting staff experiencing violence.

Day 11 – Men as allies

Most men are not violent – but men’s violence against women is the majority of gender-based violence. Ending it requires men as active allies.

Recent research found around 1 in 3 Australian men admitted to using some form of violence – physical, emotional or sexual – against a partner.
Central Western Daily

Being an ally looks like:

Challenging sexist jokes and disrespectful comments

Checking in on mates who might be using or experiencing violence

Modelling healthy, equal relationships

Teaching children that respect is non-negotiable

Men, your voice matters. Your leadership in homes, workplaces, clubs and change rooms can save lives.

Day 10 – Rural and regional risk

Living in the country should never mean being less safe.

Data shows 23% of women living outside major cities have experienced violence from a current or previous partner, compared with 15% of women in major cities.
genderequality.gov.au

In regional NSW, domestic-violence-related assault rates are significantly higher than in Greater Sydney, and are rising faster.
Central Western Daily

In places like Orange and the Central West, distance, housing shortages, stigma and limited services can all make it harder to leave and get help. That’s why local, community-based action – like the work of The Orchard and Housing Plus – is so vital.

Day 9 – Older women: the “silent crisis”

Violence against older women is often hidden – but it is happening in families, relationships and care settings.

In the last decade, around 200 older women (55+) have been killed in domestic-violence-related homicides in Australia. In 2024 alone, at least 14 older women were allegedly murdered by a family member.
The Guardian

Elder abuse can include:

Physical and sexual violence

Emotional abuse and threats

Financial abuse and control

Neglect, including in residential care

Every woman, at every age, has the right to live free from violence.
