Corner Store Network Not-for-profit social enterprise coffee roastery, preservery & cafe based in Oakleigh.

The Corner Store Network is a Melbourne based social enterprise working towards increased food security and nutrition, transparent and ethical supply chains, real climate action, minimising food waste and building engaged local communities in Australia and Timor-Leste. We do this through a number of initiatives, addressing global challenges with local solutions:

☕ Corner Store Coffee - ethical and environmental speciality coffee from Timor-Leste creating real social impact by paying farmers fairly and planting a tree for every kilo roasted.
🍋 Corner Store Preserves - seasonal and small batch preserves made from excess produce destined for landfill. Preserving the future through access to food, reducing food waste and building engaged communities.
🥐 Corner Store Cafe - a community hub for locals to come together, enjoy a meal and meet like-minded people in an inclusive and open environment.

We are looking for an experienced and passionate barista/all rounder to join our small mission-driven team.

As a social enterprise low-waste coffee roastery and cafe, we're looking for someone passionate about sustainability and specialty coffee.

We are seeking a person with great customer service skills and an ability to engage with regulars is a must, as are strong coffee skills, POS experience and a willingness to serve, clear tables, and run food.

If you make a beautiful flat white and want your work to have real impact, we'd love to meet you.

We're currently looking for a casual to work shifts across Monday - Saturday in our Oakleigh location.

The Aral Sea story is often told and viewed through the lens of an environmental disaster.

Which it is, but that description can make it sound strangely accidental.

The bigger picture is about land, labour, water and power.

For decades, water from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya was diverted to irrigate vast areas of cotton across Soviet Central Asia.

The sea retreated, fishing collapsed, soils became increasingly saline, and the exposed seabed became desert.

But the deeper story is about the system that produced those consequences.

Who decided what this land was for?
Who benefited from the crop?
And who has been left carrying the environmental cost?

It is difficult to understand the Aral Sea without talking about extraction, monoculture and the colonial history of cotton in Central Asia.

And it is difficult to look at what happened here without seeing uncomfortable parallels in the food and water systems we still build today.

I've written a longer piece unpacking the history of Karakalpakstan, the Aral Sea, cotton, irrigation and the decisions that reshaped this entire landscape.

Six months ago, I came to Karakalpakstan, a place shaped by one of the most severe human-made environmental disasters of our time.

The Aral Sea was once one of the world's largest inland bodies of water. Today, much of it is desert.

The Aral School, commissioned by ACDF, brought together local and international participants to work across food, water, ecology and community resilience, asking what kinds of systems might help people adapt as the environment around them changes.

Those six months took me to farms, kitchens, classrooms, markets, and desert landscapes, and into countless conversations about the challenges people here are already navigating: what has been lost, what has adapted, and what might still be restored, reimagined, or built differently.

Now I'm back in Karakalpakstan for the Aral Assembly, sharing some of what we learnt and helping shape what comes next.

So this is the beginning of 'Notes from the Aral Sea '.

Over the next few months, I'll be sharing the projects we built, the people I learnt from, the things that failed, the food I ate, the questions I came home with, and the ideas that changed how I think about food systems, climate resilience, and community organising.

There is a lot to tell.

But Timor is obviously so much more than coffee.

Music, language, food, art, history, storytelling, memory, culture.

This November, some extraordinary Timorese voices are coming to the Melbourne Recital Centre. Timor-Leste - Ita Nia Lian, Ita Nia Istoria - Our Voices Our Stories spotlights the vibrant new wave of Timorese music led by Hamoris Lian Timor, a creative movement dedicated to nurturing young artists, preserving cultural memory, and amplifying Timor-Leste's stories on the world stage. Emerging from community-driven collaboration across Dili, Suai, and the diaspora, Hamoris Lian Timor empowers artists to record, perform and share their lived experiences with authenticity, pride, and artistic freedom.

Big news from the CSN fam...

Jake and Laura have welcomed beautiful little River Sky into the world, and we couldn’t be happier for them.

She's absolutely perfect.

Lucky for Jake and Laura, caffeine is basically on tap around here, which feels ideal for the newborn chapter. And knowing her parents, we’re guessing River will be on a surfboard, covered in sunshine and completely at home around good coffee and this beautiful community in absolutely no time.

Sending the biggest love to all three of them as they settle into life together.

The only real question now is…how early is too early to sneak a single origin into the bottle?
