"I volunteer!" cried Lucus.

Our choir pianist jumped to the rescue.

Strange Weather needed to rehearse for our Auckland Choir Games performance in an hour.

We'd found a secluded area in the huge Aotea Centre and stood in three curved rows.

Two problems:

1) No piano for Lucus to play.

2) No music stand for our conductor, Dan.

With our pianist's hands empty, he snatched Dan's sheet music.

Lucus knelt, and held the music above his head. He envisaged himself as the Greek god Atlas, holding up the globe we call Earth.

Sadly Dan, our musical director, refused to embrace his inner tyrant, and did not go along with Lucus' ridiculous-yet-surprisingly-practical idea.

Luckily, one chorister caught a pic of those brief but glorious moments of Lucus the human music stand.

What's more, during one choir bus ride in NZ, she managed to photoshop an entire angel/demon scene from it. As if from Good Omens.

Just for fun.

You can see the scene below.

Now...

We can't promise a celestial clash of heaven and hell for each rehearsal.

But on occasion, Dan manages to coax some angelic sounds out of Strange Weather, with his experienced choir coaching techniques.

To experience it all yourself, feel free to drop by our rehearsals sometime.

Wednesdays 7pm-9pm at O'Connor Uniting Church.

Email our friendly Alison at [email protected] and say you'd like to drop by.

How we become 'Adelaide's best choir'?

We had just performed in the Auckland Choir Games.

"Adelaide's best choir!" yelled someone in the audience.

Both Strange Weather and audience laughed (but for very different reasons).

The audience had swarmed Auckland Town Hall to see the competitors of the Mixed Chamber Choirs Open Section.

And WE were first up.

To our amusement, the Event Guide somehow listed our Canberra choir as from 'Adelaide, Australia'.

It threw us for a loop and made us doubt everything.

Have we been rehearsing in the wrong city for our entire 25+ year history?

Was Canberra even real?

Were the Adelaide Choral Ambassadors here REALLY from Adelaide?

Was up really down?

Are cats really snobby dogs in disguise?

In any case, probably thought the guy who yelled out was just an enthusiastic fan.

And technically that's true. He's the housemate to a couple of our choristers, supportive enough to travel to New Zealand and cheer us.

But when he publicly declared us 'Adelaide's best choir' he knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

And we knew exactly the joke he made.

And now YOU’RE in on it too.

If you ever catch us boasting we're 'Adelaide's best choir', you'll know it's not hubris. Just a silly in-joke from a funny mistake.

(A bit like when chorister Graham Eagar was once accidentally announced as 'Gary Ego'.)

Feel free to make that joke yourself if you decide to drop in to try us out for a rehearsal.

Wednesdays 7pm-9pm. O’Connor Uniting Church.
